What would you buy? £15-25k Ulez compliant

Hi guys new to the forum

I'm looking for a range but unsure which way to go. I know it needs to be at least a 2009 model for the newer interior and ULEZ compliant. So far I've narrowed the options down to :

A - £15k 2010-2012 5.0 Autobiography, 100k+ miles - Private Sale, potentially big jobs like timing chains not done.

B - £18-20k - Same as above but FSH, <100k Miles. Ideally would be from a forum or Land Rover enthusiast.

C - £23k - Same as above but from a dealer so potentially some comeback if something goes wrong.

D - £25/26k - L405 4.4 Vogue SE, 120k+ miles, FSH.


Not sure which way to go. I could buy a cheap car and have £3-8k to bring the maintenance up to date and do the chains/tensioners if not done (what does this usually cost?). Is that enough?

An enthusiast car or something with FSH means hopefully a few of the big jobs will be done already but no guarantee something else won't happen 2 weeks later! No comeback

A dealer car gives a bit of comeback but you pay dearly for it.


A leggy L405 could work but don't know much about them yet. Would love some help on this!

Difficult choice but this site is amazing so do your research before jumping in

Option B would be my choice

Whatever you choose make sure you have a big contingency fund for repairs. Spending big on the purchase of a late L322 or early L405 won’t remove the need for a good reserve of cash for repairs. 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

Yeah that makes sense, totally expecting to put some money aside to keep it running. Hopefully someone on here will have something decent so a couple of the big jobs will be ticked off.

I've noticed that most dealers I've spoken to don't seem bothered about the service history which isn't ideal.

Due to GDPR rules it’s no longer possible to get a repair history from a dealer as they have to remove anything with a name or address. You should be able to see a stamped service book to show oil and other service item intervals but that’s about it. Take your time and keep a close watch on the for sale section here where you will get all the history from someone who has owned and cared for the vehicle. Some very nice cars been here recently which makes me wish I’d waited a bit more and the good ones go quick so keep a regular look out. Used cars are in short supply at the moment and the prices are high so dealers are shifting anything and everything with little effort. A bad time to be a buyer….. 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

Option D - I don't think you can get an ULEZ Euro 6 for £26k
those were heading sub £30k but covid / chip shortage / used car madness knocked that on the head

A/B - But not be fuzzy about mileage, look at the condition and specification of the vehicle. Buy one that is complete, well treated, has quality parts on it, and quality tyres etc. Unless very cheap. I'd also not be that fuzzy about full service history depending on the price. Ultimately it is just a car, it is easy to get it in a known condition, so if the price is right then I wouldn't be concerned. And finally, no need to do the guides on the 5.0SC preventatively. This internet thing has really come alive when prospective buyers are thinking like this. Sure there are several reports, but there are many thousands more who have no such issues.

Bl4ckD0g - Hi mate, my worry is that a £4k job could turn a good buy into a bad buy quickly. I guess if it's cheap enough that will be a non issue!

Very easy to spend at least £4K in repairs on these cars in various ways so don’t get fixated on just one potential issue. 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

Indeed. On a 12 year old car you are likely going to have encounter many things that simply may get worn for a variety of reasons, not least old age.

I have definitely got myself fixated on the timing chain issue!


Here's a few I've been looking into - Waiting to see who can provide service history and receipts.

1 - £13,995 Dealer, 138k, No Service History available. Suspension fault when I turned it on. Oil leak on the MOT.

1 - Is a bit ratty but there is a decent margin to bring it up to date. Lack of service history would probably be an issue down the line.

2 - Seems basically OK.

3/4 - Also seem OK, bit of a dealer premium.

4 years ago now in advance of the various ULEZ changes I took Option C and haven't looked back. My very late model 2011 5.0 S/C has been a superb vehicle, and any minor bits that have needed doing I've done myself. So far no scares at all, other than the £600 yearly road tax letter!

If you are risk averse and worried about big bills I’d avoid eBay ‘dealers’ and private sales on eBay. At least with a genuine trader you have rights if something goes wrong. 5.0’s do seem to hold quite a premium but have you worked out the extra fuel needed to run one + extra purchase cost vs the ULEZ charge over 3.6 or 4.4? 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

JayGee - Probably a good idea. A few dealers have OK prices. If a forumer car doesn't turn up I'll just get one of those.

The premium over a 4.4 is only £2k or so now. Ulez is £4550/yr now it's the whole of London, every day except xmas.

If you drive every day then yes the ULEZ charge will offset the fuel and capital cost differences. I luckily only do a max of 3 days a week and sometimes less so can just about live with it. 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)
