OP I have exactly the same noise that I have been unable to fix either - what is it about the heat shield that typically goes wrong? |

The shield can crack but it could also just be a loose/stripped mounting screw as its only held on with 6 (I think) bolts.

Sounds more like there is a grizzly bear stuck under there. 2003 4.4 V8 Vogue. Oslo Blue.

@cass; thanks for the tip and your explanation would make perfect sense. There is actually a small misting of oil around the gear box after they did a service 2 years ago. it´s not enough to do anything about but they guy who did it probably did not know what he was doing....
