From memory, the iidtool needs to be registered with the VIN after purchase via GAP directly, I’m pretty sure it doesn’t lock to the first vehicle it talks to.
As has been said, it can read (and maybe clear faults) without being registered but it will need registered to make vehicle config changes.

Does anybody know what the boost (turbo) actuator is called in the workshop manual? I’ve been trying to find information on it but can’t for the life of me track it down, scrolling through or using the word search.

So things have taken an interesting turn (and I suspect for the best). After winning the auction, and has had been said on some negative reviews of Reading no reserve auctions (Sterling Cars, Reading), I called a few times to arrange to view / collect the car. Each time I was told that I needed to speak to the manager as the FFRR was at the garage and they weren't sure why.

After a few days I got through to the manager (the line must have been diverted to his mobile) and was told the car was terminally damaged according to the garage and they could not be sell me a dud (he said they would try to go back through BCA). I don't know much about BCA auctions but I'd be surprised if there is any comeback for them to BCA.

It feels very much like what I have read about, where the winning bid is not as high as they would like so they back out of the deal. I guess I will never know.

There’s nothing stopping you registering to view both BCA & Manheim auctions online.
You won’t be able to see what the prices are going to be, but if you’re brave, you can buy as a ‘private’ individual. You’ll get stung horrendous fees being non trade but it’ll be another string to your search bow? Stocks are at an all time low so there’s not a huge amount of vehicles around & those that are, are making silly money.
I know Manheim are letting ‘trade’ customers view stock at some of their sites as they did pre-Covid but unsure what BCA are doing. 2012 Orkney Grey Westminster 4.4TDV8 with Ivory interior.........nice!
