Oil Cooler / oil return leak running onto transmission pan?

Hi All,

Sorry for my first post to be an ask for help, but here it goes.

Been a lurking in the forum for quite a while whilst I looked for my first range rover and a daily reader, Love the community.

I've just purchased my first range rover (2011 tdv8 4.4 Vogue) full service history, ~120k, 3 owners, seems like quite an honest car and drives well.

Picked up the car on Friday from a dealer after requesting a few things to be fixed, Control arms, little bit of paint etc. For peace of mind took it to a friends garage and stuck it on a ramp to check further underneath. At that point found dirty oil coming down the block. The dealer came to collect it, cleaned it up and inspected and said he suspected it to be old oil from the filter change, and that there shouldn't be any more.

Took her out for an hours drive today, mixed town, b roads and a bit of motorway. On coming home checked underneath and the oil is back. I suspect from reading here it is the oil cooler, however there seems to be seepage from the transmission oil pan.

I suspected its the oil cooler or the oil return. But concerned the belly pan might be more than runback?

I should clarify the dealer is more than cooperative to get it fixed.

However, I wanted to get your thoughts before I go back to them tomorrow, and anything else I could / should have done whilst there?

Thanks in advance! -----------------------------------

Could be the oil cooler - check the coolant and coolant header for oil contamination. Or could be the oil cooler return pipe O ring. Both common problems on these engines.(and could be both). 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

Thanks JayGee, was literally adding the o-rings to the original post. ( wasn't there when you replied)

Do you think the oil on the transmission is likely to just be runback? Not new to issues ( many years of vw's etc) but still unfamiliar with longitude engines / transmissions.

The transmissions don’t typically suffer leaks but a transmission service should be on your list of to-do’s for a new L322 owner. 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

Will go back to the dealer in a mo. Vanstones in Cornwall seem to have serviced it in the past, and only 50 mins down the road, So will get it booked in for that transmission service, see if the dealer wants them to do the leaks at the same time.

Thanks JayGee, much appreciated. -----------------------------------

I’d say that’s 99% oil cooler gaskets and the O rings. Get it back to them and request a new oil cooler is fitted. They can warp so just doing the gaskets risks a future leak. O rings = fit Viton ones. All in the Wiki under Engine section

get the oil cooler and coolant bottle changed. Here is my bill. it was £600-700 + 7 hrs labour. I also had the transmission and diff oils done. you'll never need to worry again. mines been perfect since.

Looking at your mileage, it’s probably odds on to be the oil cooler, also, if the gearbox hasn’t been serviced then to be honest, it’s about time to do so. Whether you go for a mega flush or just an oil & filter change, the choice is yours. I had mine megaflushed in year one of ownership & oil & filter in year two, think I had a slight weep from the gearbox pan as well, so you can kill 2 birds with one stone!😀

Thanks all for the replies and help. Made me smile this morning, community is half the fun of owning an iconic car for me.

Following the general advice here, bought with a good contingency for servicing and less expected events.

I will update my progress and some photos when i get a chance.

Thanks again
