New tyres fix my Range Rover Vogue gearbox problems

I just thought I would share my good news regarding the gearbox on my Range Rover Vogue SE 2010MY which had been causing me problems since I bought it, in case it helps anyone else.

Having bought the car and got it off the forecourt and on to the motorway it was clear that the six speed auto gearbox was not changing between 5 and 6 properly. In fact the revs would go as high as 3500 before changing. The dealer arranged for a flush. This thoroughly wrecked the gearbox and it needed to be completely overhauled. Having got it back( a few weeks later) the gearbox was demonstrating exactly the same symptoms for gear 5 and 6. It went back to the gearbox garage. They fitted new mass air flow sensors. Still the same problem between 5 and 6. I tried resetting the gearbox, no change. All during this time the Gap IID tool indicated that there were no problems with the transmission module.

Having read a few threads here and other forums I decided to try new tyres all round. The dealer had fitted an odd, cheap tyre to get it through the MOT . All the other tyres were cheap, horrible ones, and one was very near the limit. I had four new Pirelli Verde tyres fitted and this solved the problem as soon as I left the tyre shop forecourt. I am so pleased.

Classic case of different wear patterns and slightly different rolling circumference as a result on the same axle completely confusing the gearbox, I had this on my old e39 528i in the rear- baffles me for ages until I got a new pair of tyres for mot- completely fixed the issue! 2009 (2010 MY) 5.0 Supercharged Autobiography

Wow, I see the threads on Mega Flushes etc and wonder how a dealer can get this so wrong, did they do this themselves or a 3rd party? Do these gearbox manufactures recommend such flushes?

I hope you bill them for the new tyre's? as the originals are clearly not fit for purpose. 2018 SE SDV8 4.4 Byron Blue

ZF do not recommend flushing and that was enough for me to not go with a megaflush. 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

thats Interesting, I was advised to have my gearbox flushed but I thought I would just drain the oil two or three times when I did the engine
Glad I didn’t now

Straight from the horse’s mouth:

Thank you for your enquiry.

ZF do not recommend any flushes for the transmission. If you are experiencing any issues with shifting quality then it is strongly recommended that you have the vehicle inspected by an experienced technician.

Interesting. I wonder why they specifically recommend against it. Especially has so many have had it done and its worked wonders. 2011 4.4 TDV8 Vogue SE - 'Black Betty'

I wonder if the ZF comment was referring to using a flushing oil rather than using the correct fluid.

Note that the ZF-produced 6-speed gbox fitted to every brand of vehicle beginning from somewhere in 2008 through to at least the end of LR fitting the 6-speed gbox to its vehicles was fitted with white-metal stator bushes which don't like long oil change intervals. If the oil is not changed regularly then best not to change at all until rebuild time as new oil is thinner than the old oil that is carrying metal particles which then immediately causes E-clutch pressure issues due to the worn bushes. When rebuilt by ZF the previous bronze stator buses are used. Been there with my MY10 D4 but my brother's MY08 RRS' VIN is before the start of the white-metal bushes.

In the case of my car, when I took it to the specialist for the mega flush the only problem was the 5 to 6 gear change. The guy explained that 9 out of 10 cars could be successfully mega-flushed. It seems that mine was the tenth. When it came out of there, any revs above about 2000 locked the transmission completely. Later, the gearbox garage said that all the clutches had been completely damaged. My car had less than 100,000 miles on the clock.

So you pay your money and take your chance!

Thanks for all the interesting replies by the way.

By "locked" I mean put it into limp mode.

The E-clutch is on the same shaft as the pump with its white-metal bushes and the effect is the clutch not locking quickly enough when trying to use 5th or 6th due to inadequate pressure from the leaking pump, which then triggers limp-home mode. My D4 had done 120K KMS of country driving with me always guarding against unnecessary torque converter slip, but too many kms for the worn white-metal bushes after the oil and filter change on a gearbox that had no issues before the oil (LG6) change.
