Well, I voted for the 4.4 in the poll…. To me, the only real thing to watch for is the oil cooler leaking…. And you can see that.

The thing the 3.6 suffers from is random lunching of a turbo by the engine. No warning… then you are left with a very expensive paper weight.

The TD6 has the gearbox made from softer aluminium for the valve body. I think recon boxes are about £1000 odd?

The rest of the issues…. Rust…. Electrical stuff…. Air suspension are common to them all.

So if the 4.4 is out due to budget, TD6 for me….

I went from TD6 to 4.4 as I didn’t want the engine worry with the 3.6.

I know thousands of folk never have an issue, but you don’t need to be fixing that, especially given the budget.

If you love the TD6, you can save for a 4.4 in the longer term.

I see that people are pointing out the 4.4 is better. I'm sure it is and in fact my wish list said "Diesel, 4.4 preferred, 3.6 considered". As chance would have it a 3.6 of the right spec came up before a 4.4.

But what knocks the 4.4 out of the equation completely here I think is;

This is I think very likely true, buying from an enthusiast has a definite value. I would though recommend not doing so. I totally get it about scratching the itch, however there is a risk you remove the top from the scab and start bleeding

In my opinion the L322 provides quite different experiences over the years that it was available, the trim levels you can get, and the engines that are available. They really vary, in my opinion of course, from really not that great, to absolutely awesome. Before settling on mine, unseen, I was very familiar with the differences by then. In my opinion there is also a huge difference in handling.

Two years ago you'd be able to get a really nice one for the budget you've set yourself, with around just 100K miles so barely run in. But now the prices are very much so inflated, I see worse than mine up for sale for double of what I paid. I'm afraid you'd have to wait a bit beyond April. I have no doubt the prices will come down again as for the last year they are just way overpriced...

I voted for the TD6 this is based on the criteria you have given and the fact i have owned one.

if you can find a good example of a TD6 with history that the GB has been serviced and perhaps spend a few quid on another service you should be good to go.

i had a TD6 and the GB let go and i stumped up to have a new GB was £2000 odd with a new TC. this was a great car and towed my TA caravan very well. It does feel a bit under powered for such a large lump and is a little noisy but overall was a good car. + i have just looked at the prices of the 4.4TDV8 and they have gone up significantly since i purchased mine in fact we buy any car are offering me more than i paid for it!! lucky me

I brought my TDV8 4.4 on 2012 plate just over a year ago and i have had to spend some money on it most i have done the work myself but this is the list.

1) Gearbox service full flush and new filter
2) both front ball joints
3) New belts tensioners water pump and pullies (Water pump was done as the car was in bits so why not)
4) New Bilstein rear shock (The other was just 9 months old)
5) New rear lower arms both sides
6) New tyres all round
7) new oil cooler (I replaced the whole thing rather than just gaskets)
x2 oil filter changes
9) new AC compressor
10) new front disc and pads

so given the age of my car i view most of this as wear and tear really and to be expected for a car with 120K and 10 years old. I love it and to be honest most on that list i had to do on my TD6 which was a 2005 car i think.

so in my opinion to get a TDV8 4.4 with nothing in place for these sort of items or the potential to not be able to get them done when required would be too risky because all cars what ever the brand at this age and mileage will need some form of maintenance hence me voting for the TD6. 2012 Vogue 4.4 TDV8 - Current

Out of interest what was the rule on vehicle taxation changes? Is it up to and including’55 plate is on lower vehicle tax? Which would be End of March 2006

If I go TD6 then I don’t see the point of taking on extra cost unless necessary, as the only difference is the face lift between 2005 and 2006. The TD6 maintained the same interior throughout from memory

The earlier non touchscreen TD6, based on BMW infotainment system is easier to get upgrades for I recon.

Bluetooth…. Hybrid TV…. All BMW based.

The touchscreen cars… 2005? Are Ford based and harder to mod/upgrade…

Thought I’d asked but couldn’t see it in my inbox…because I moved it to a safe place….where I would never forget the location!…just like the missing car keys that turned up in the freezer last year!

I think TD6 is probably the way forward, and then move to a 4.4TDV8 later from the comments given budget constraints on initial purchase. Pre ‘06 plate to take advantage of the lower tax (why not?) and have a safety net for any major repairs.

I’ll put a wanted post out at some point in February, as c.3months should be enough time to find one. In the meantime if any come up I’ll keep an open mind about moving a little earlier.

I voted for the TD6 . Apart for the know gearbox issues . Its a fantastic motor.

I'm a proud owner of a 2005 TD6 that has covered 200,000 km . Not major issues, no rust . But then I am in Australia
Unfortunately my TD6 will have to go soon . Just bought a 2017 L405 SDV8
