Whatever happened to yellow headlamps, I remember that in France in the 1980’s yellow headlamps we’re standard. What was the reason they were adopted? And why they are no longer used?

Reason I ask is I just found some yellow covers for my Series 3 Land Rover! So obviously been overseas in its life at some point.

The idea is that yellow light gives less discomfort and glare, especially in adverse weather conditions. The tests that were done compared to original tungsten lights did not highlight a huge difference, and I can see that. Normal lights at about 3200-4300K is fine.

I must admit I actually agree. Whilst those modern LED Matrix/Laser lights are super bright, I do wish that at times you can make them a bit warmer (i.e. more yellow) in colour temperature. It is like watching a movie on a TV in vivid mode which is not a good thing.

But that ship has sailed, people seem to want the ultra bright white touching on blue lights. I prefer them around 4300K, opposed to about 5500-6000K they seem to be at these days...

Yellow headlights, peculiar to France, became a legal requirement in 1936. They continued to be so until 1993.

They are still legal but the vehicle should conform to the manufacturers' specification which means that vehicles produced for a number of years have white lights.

Last month I sold a tractor (1974 Massey Ferguson) which still had yellow bulbs in the headlights. John
