The idea is that yellow light gives less discomfort and glare, especially in adverse weather conditions. The tests that were done compared to original tungsten lights did not highlight a huge difference, and I can see that. Normal lights at about 3200-4300K is fine.

Yellow headlights, peculiar to France, became a legal requirement in 1936. They continued to be so until 1993.
