United Kingdom 2006 Range Rover Supercharged 4.2 SC V8 Buckingham Blue

Further to what I said before, down to 9mpg around the village, I have recently been getting 13mpg.

Took it for its first long run across to Sleaford area yesterday and where possible ran at the legal speed limit so 70 on the duals, 60 elsewhere and I still had fun with it, out accelerating many other cars with a silly grin! I managed 20mpg over around 140 miles.

That is way better than I ever expected when I bought it, so no complaints from me. Range Rover 4.2 Supercharged 2006

06 sc for me.

Full tank of petrol generally sees me around 450 miles. That's a bit of town driving and motorway driving. Easy enough too achieve 25mpg long as you keep it around 60mph but can also get it down too 8mpg.

Reliability is pretty spot on. Mines got 165k on it and it just pulls away like its on a sling shot. 6 speed box is nice especially as I've added the flappy paddles. Hoping too get mine in soon for some power upgrades. Doing power upgrades on a 15 year old car says it all I guess

Can I ask what power upgrades you are thinking of?
I have considered a pulley change but am still undecided? Range Rover 4.2 Supercharged 2006

Pulley change
Remap
Galdoofy intake
Sports decat
Full service
Charger service and bearing replacement

That's the plan for early next year but I'm going to get the range on the dyno in the morning, take it to the garage and then take it back too the dyno for both sides benefit

Thanks for all your replies gentlemen, I think the decision is already made in my head. Just wanted to double triplecheck the 05-06 difference and the gearbox aspect. Something I've read over the internet leads me to hopefully wrong thoughts that 05 year can be equipped with 5 speed ZF, not 6 speed. Wanted to check with 05 owners that aspect Smile

I think Freud is playing tricks here, instead of an 05SC you should get a 50SC Rolling with laughter

Like Bl4ckdog says if your budget allows for a 5.0, get one of them. Much better car overall for your money. You won't regret it!!!!

Never known a 4.2sc to have a 5 speed box tbh. I see a few 55 plates and they have 6 speed boxes

Well looking at prices, it depends what one wants and what the budget is...

There is a bit of crossover there, I think some good bargains to be had for what are awesome cars...

All 4.2 SC's had the 6 speed gearbox, the 5 speed was never fitted to any of the AJV8 variants.

I'd be hard pushed to decide if I was going for a newer L322. The 5.0 is a stonking engine but can have timing chain issues that will cost around 3-4k to have put right and it still has the 6 speed gearbox.

The 4.4 TDV8 is a great engine too but has the benefit of the 8 speed box which is superb and is much smoother and quicker at shifting than the 6 speed.

The 5.0 engine is also noisier then the 5.0 as the direct injection makes it sound quite ticky. I own a 5.0 SC and a 4.2 SC and the 4.2 is much quieter. I personally don't think a late, low mileage 5.0 in the L322 is worth £10k more then a properly sorted 4.2 but that's just me Smile

i agree with David..my old 4.2 was very quiet and very smooth....the 4.4 is renown for its massive torque and can scare the pants of you when you press that pedal down hard... ... - .- -.

I hear that a lot, and see it everywhere. Of all the many sold how many actually have had this problem? Outside of the internet I just don't hear or see about it. Plenty of cars have wear and tear in engines but aren't made a big deal about as this thing in context of a Range Rover.

True, for a big V8 it is slightly noisy, when standing outside and idling. When you are inside or driving you don't hear any such noise. The standard exhaust system is also very quiet, too quiet for a V8 although some may call it fitting for a Range Rover...

David.

As per the link above, it isn't so clear cut in price difference at all. There is a lot more power in the 5.0SC though, and even more to gain with a bit of simple tuning. And then there is the much much better interior and general specification as well. But hey it is good there is so much choice, something for everyone Thumbs Up

I have an 07 4.2SC and its on 275 BFG AT's and its doing 12.5mpg combined. I have done over 10k miles in it in just over 6 months and it has needed some stuff but its been mainly wear items like alternators and front air strut.

Its serviced ever 5k miles for longevity.

AT's on wet tarmac are terrible!

Mine feels wobbly going round corners (it was like that on road tyres), might start changing some suspension bits to see if it makes a difference.

I got the later one because I wanted 2 cup holders hahahaha

It's a well documented issue on the Jaguar forums due to more of them having the 5.0 then then in RR's. It's also well documented on the American LR forums. My local specialist says he regularly does them and it's not that long since a member on here advertised his car due to the timing chains having slipped.

There's also been quite a few of them listed on eBay/AutoTrader with "Timing chains already replaced" stated in the adverts so there's plenty of proof out there that it's a known issue. The fact that JLR changed the materials on the guides and tensioners in 2013/2014 suggests they know it too.

In the RR there are relatively few 5.0's out there when compared to TDV8's and 4.2's so when things like issues with the chains come along and they're at the point where they'll cost anything between 1/4, 1/3 or even 1/2 the value of the earlier or leggier 5.0's to put right it'll put a lot of people off.

If I saw one with the chains needing done for project money I'd buy it just to see what kind of a job they are to do Smile 2002 4.6 Vogue SE - Alveston Red with Lightstone Leather

I think it is largely a self fulfilling prophecy. It gets repeated so much that people do them when they don't need doing. Heck I even thought I needed them doing several years ago when I got mine. I was 'paranoid' listening out for the noise, but you know what these engines are actually noisy, and it isn't always the tensioner, the other thing that also gets noisy is the supercharger coupler and the play that can come from it.

The internet is always full of stories where things go wrong, not of stories where they don't. My gosh you wouldn't dare to buy a Nissan Navara as all their 'bottom ends explore', or no BMW or Porsche V8 as the bore linings all perish, or Range Rover in general as they are all so reliable. All stories have an element of truth as in that it happens, happened, and could happen, but that doesn't mean it happens to everyone or that you need to preventitatively swap it out.

Don't get me wrong, I do like those stories as it means you can get some right bargains Thumbs Up
