2012 Westminster Gearbox issues

Hi all, got in my 2012 4.4tdv8 Westminster this morning, started up fine, popped into gear and no movement whatsoever. Soon as it is put into a gear it comes up with a yellow warning saying gearbox fault. As it doesn’t move, it’s looking like I’ve got to get it recovered. Is it common for these to spark up sudden gearbox failures? I’m wondering if an oil change might cure, worst case the torque converter might of failed?

Not a very common issue no sir... Have you a fault code reader? It might have just thrown a wobbler?

Before having it recovered i would at least perform a battery reset... Thumbs Up

Thanks Craig, I'll give that a go tonight when I get home. Even with the engine running can that still throw up battery issues? Seems strange for it to suddenly occur. The car done around 400 miles on Fri/Sat with no problems at all.

If the battery doesn't assist, can anyone recommend any gearbox specialists either around London or further a field? Everyone I've spoken to so far just want to offer a reconditioned replacement before even considering repair. I have to consider that the car is on 173k miles, I love it however need to consider costs vs the age and mileage of the car.

check battery and read codes then clear, you might get lucky.

My only experience was with https://wimbledonautomatics.co.uk/ did my torque converter years ago, strange little place but seemed to know what they are doing.

The mystery deepens... left the car idling for around 20mins this morning to allow everything to warm up. Upon turning the engine off and switching it back on, everything came back to life, car drives normal.

I have noticed on rare occasions the rotary selector goes solid and won't turn, then comes back to life in a couple of minutes. Im wondering if this is either a battery or selector issue now?

On every L322 we've had, whenever the battery voltage gets low the first error message to come up on the screen is gearbox fault.

Personally, I'd put the battery on charge over night and see how you get on. Now the weather has got cold batteries are the first things to suffer and on the Range Rovers, if the battery isn't fighting fit they don't like it.

Do you know if the battery has ever been changed?

Battery last replaced 2019 I believe. A leak on the steering rack KO'ed the alternator beginning of the year so that was replaced around March time.

I've got a little Ctek 5.0, I'm guessing they are all OK to clip on to the battery?

I have had batteries die in 2-3years, usually still under warranty so might be worth getting it checked and if its done in they will send you out a new one.

Make sure the alternator is still putting out 14.4v you never know the new one might have an issue.

Check for drains and earthing at the battery and engine.

Ctek is fine that's what we use on our cars, im not sure how good it is but they have a recondition feature to so i tend to do that once a year. Never really noticed the difference if i am honest.

Did you pull the codes?

Yep, clip the MXS-5 onto it and wait until it tells you the battery is fully charged then see if you get any issues over the next few days. Thumbs Up 2002 4.6 Vogue SE - Alveston Red with Lightstone Leather

I think Baltic Blue (Mike) had this issue after being away for a bit. Battery IIRC.
Mike may be along soon.

Mine was stuck in P Greg after standing for 4 weeks whilst I was away.
My CTEK had been connected throughout the holiday, so I knew it wasn’t the cause.

I eventually cleared it by cycling the high low range selector, and it’s never returned, thankfully.
