Good evening Nick when I replaced mine recently, with complete new ones, I decided to strip the old ones just to see how they went together.

That's true for practically all of them but I had both fronts done with complete struts a couple of months ago. When I had the second one done I got an Arnott strut and it came with the damper already fitted and all the clips for cables etc as well. The first one didn't have it and it was necessary to change it over. It was finally removed when the strut was off the car. One of the difficulties is when you try to remove it in situ everything turns. John 2008 Stornoway Grey 3.6 Tdv8 Vogue 2005 TD6 Java Black Vogue - Written off!! Getting them to 250 to break the hold is the hard part IMO.. I think I used a 2KW hot air gun and a laser temperature gun, I couldn’t believe it just screwed off (with welders gloves) when it got up to temperature.

If you've got the top of the strut off, turn the oven up as hot as it'll go, bung it in it for 20 mins to let it get hot then remove it.
