Lower Ball joints, an observation | |
2 months ago I changed all the control arms and ball joints on my TD6 before selling the car. It was hard work and getting out the separate lower ball joints was a real struggle. I was aware they were a tight fit so was ready for the fight but they certainly were in there, heat and a 4lb hammer finally got them out. The new ones were equally tight to refit so I used normal bolts instead of the stupid T50 torque set screws which made refitting so much easier. I did it over 2 days as it was such hard work
Today on my 2007 TDV8 I did the same job, I had the same brand parts and again was ready for the struggle. Once the set screws were removed the ball joints came out with a light tap, same on both sides. The new ball joints went in just as easy. I compared old and new and they were exactly the same sizing. The old ball joint and arms were original, never changed before.
Maybe Land Rover eased up on the tolerances? whatever both sides arms and ball joints took 3 1/2 hours from start to finish so very happy with that job now out of the way.
