I had been chasing a whine and vibration for a while - replaced all wheel bearings front carriers rear diff and stilll it persisted now at last we have it sorted it was a worn nearside front driveshaft - there was a lot if movement in it so one to watch for suppose

Well what a coincidence, I am having the nearside front driveshaft and front diff changed this coming Wednesday. I have also changed the 4 wheel bearings, actually bought a rear diff also but after a lot of investigations did not change it. So fingers crossed this will sort out the slight vibration and the rumble, a sort of err err erring noise it has had for a good while now which changes when the nearside is put under load. Your post has given me hope.

I hope it solves the problem it took me a while to find mine and I do 20 odd k a year

Change the oil in the rear diff and if it is black and thick you may need to replace the diff - when they were manufactured they were painted on the inside and this paint peels and makes a paste which basically grinds the diff away - worth changing the oil anyway

No it wasn't so this week have replaced the front diff and this time it is silent and no vibration - result

Sandyt good news for you. However after having the front diff and n/s driveshaft changed the noise/rumble is still there on mine.. Hmmm.

Well in total I changed front and rear diffs (rear had a bearing gone ) all wheel bearings and all drive shafts. I did the rears all in one go due to damage from the failed bearing,. Interestingly on the front it was the bearing in the extension arm of the diff that had failed/was failing the diff was ok maybe a little bit of wear but nothing much.
I dont mind replacing stuff as mine has done 185k miles and I drive fairly hard .
It is quite disappointing when you change stuff and it doesn't solve it

Sandy, is your car still nice and quiet after replacing the front end of the drivetrain? Did you use genuine or after market driveshafts?

Do you know which ones if aftermarket?

I know from previous posts you do a high mileage so am interested to see how they’re holding out if aftermarket.

Like you say, changing things and not seeing a difference becomes soul destroying after you’ve done a big job so I’m tempted to change everything in one go on mine.

Morning David I used genuine I always do if I can -I had trouble with an aftermarket wheel bearing years ago so just stick to genuine
Mine is still going great guns need yet another new windscreen M74 this time
Following your thread on the rebuild and great stuff been going on and love the fact you are so pleased with the ride after the suspension work.

I always buy genuine parts as well, however, looking on the Rimmer Bros website a pair of genuine front shafts would cost near as dammit 1400 quid today. I know Duckworths would beat this but given all the work I’ve done in the last 10 months, if there was a decent aftermarket shaft that someone else had tried and tested and could vouch for I might take a punt to save a few quid

I’ve got a brand new front diff, both wheel bearings and the intermediate bearings for the drivers side shaft already so will keep an eye out for genuine shafts and then I can do the entire front end in one go.

Did you replace your diff yourself?

No I had my local mechanic do it was chatting in the pub with him and he had just done his own (he has a 2007 Diesel 3.6) so was asking if it was difficult he said no and did the lot on the front end for 150 quid so it seemed like a good idea
I will ask him though because I think he put after market into another one in the village Let me ask him tomorrow

To be honest David he does loads of \Fatties in the village knows them well and is cheap as chips I am doing less and less even on the p38
He did the rust on wheel arches resprayed the bonnet and both bumpers for 600 quid and a cracking job but we do go to the pub and stuff so a good mate to have
