Turns out it's much easier to change the fluid using a vacuum pump than it is by running the engine.

Not sure how complete it is to change all the fluid but turning the steering with the engine off seems to pump it out quite quickly even when the return pipe isn't under vacuum.

I simply disconnected the return line after draining the reservoir and then connected it to the vacuum extractor. Then I blocked off the spigot on the reservoir with a small piece of tube and a bolt.

I topped up the reservoir and applied vacuum, before long 2 litres had passed through and it looks pretty clean now. A few turns lock to lock help pump the fluid out into the extractor even with the engine not running.

As you can see the old fluid looks pretty dirty.

I was thinking or getting one of these and going this job as my RR hasn’t been particularly looked after by the previous owner. I’m interested if there was any perceptible difference with fresh fluid in the PAS system ? Current

I can't tell from driving the car as it's still up in the air with the wheels off awaiting my new discs and pads.

I'm sure the pump is less likely to fail if the fluid is decent, this was my major reasoning.
It certainly cannot be worse than before.

The inspection 2 sheet doesn't show the PAS fluid to be changed though. Christian.
