Full battery voltage....

I've seen a few posts discussing the acceptable voltage on a battery, so decided to test mine this morning.

I've made a lead which goes from the (Draper Expert) charger in the garage and runs to the white 7-pin electrics of my tow-bar, which means I can put the battery on an overnight trickle charge when the car is locked.

This morning, I was pleased to find that the battery lamp on the charger was indicating green, meaning it was fully charged. I pulled the plug out and fetched a multimeter to see what it was showing:

That'll be surface charge on the battery. It's isn't an accurate reading.

You should leave the battery for 12 hours for the surface charge to disappate before taking a voltage reading. Turning your headlights on for a couple minutes should achieve the same thing also. As soon as current is drawn, the voltage will settle down to the nominal battery voltage. Kev

The AGMs typically operate at 70% to 80% charged in operation. So 12.3 could be a typical voltage reading after a long run.

Twelve hours on and I've re-checked the battery voltage. It's currently sitting at 12.81v which I'm very happy with.

The car is new to me, so I've no idea how old the battery actually is. Thumbs Up The older I get, the more I realise that people confuse wrinkles for wisdom Smile
