Starting Issue

Hi Everyone,

So I went to start the RR this morning and it didn’t start. I had it happen the other day once but thought it was something I’d done wrong as it started the second time I tried.

This morning: Key in ignition, and I heard the click, moved to position 1 and the steering column moved as per usual, but then moved to position 2 and nothing happened. I tried it a few times and on one go it sounded like it started but then stopped. Tried another time and then it started and was all good.

All lights looked fine on the dash, said it was in park. Dual batteries installed so no issues with voltage.

Cheers for any help

It's a fairly common problem with the ignition switch, can either be solved by cleaning out the switch or replacing it.
See the thread below for more information:

Fairly easy problem to sort. Thumbs Up

Had the same, intermittent start failures with no cranking, slowly got worse, till I fitted a new ignition switch.

See the below excellent post on how to change the ignition switch, followed this myself. It is not as bad as it looks.
See at the bottom of the thread as to how to split the ignition switch from the barrel.

Best to have a car trim tool kit and you will need torx bits. Thumbs Up

Hi batfink, mine went on for weeks, started out as the odd random failure, and got to the point where it would take up to ten attempts to start. I had ignored it as it was the middle of winter, so when I finally changed mine it was outside at minus 4 degrees C, not funny without gloves on! so you may get away with it until you finish your holidays. Fingers crossed.

Only other thing I can think of is to first check that all your battery, starter and earth connections are clean and tight. Just in case. Thumbs Up

As long as it eventually gets going then I’m fine with that and will fix it when I get back home in a few days as I’ve no told with me at all.

One little tip, near the end with my old faulty switch, when I turned the key against the spring return for cranking, instead of starting I got low volume little electronic beeps, sounded like they came from the centre console, which was rather strange, key out / back in and several attempts later it would start, never heard then again after changing the switch.

Just see how it goes, fingers crossed. Enjoy the rest of your holidays Thumbs Up

So, I got a replacement switch from Duckworths and installed it after the holiday and it had been good since then.

Then yesterday I got in and the same thing happened again, all lights on the dash came on as they should but turned to position 2 and no starting. It started fine on the second go Big Cry

Could it be a faulty switch they've sent me or is there something else that could cause this intermittent non start ?

All I can think of at the moment is to check all the battery / earth connections for tightness and / or corrosion and go from there. Assuming that the battery is ok.
Maybe once a month or a little longer, I get the same, sometimes I think it is the way I operate the key, on second attempt it always works.

Thanks Merchy, I'll check the connections and see if anything is amiss.

So I checked all cables were tight today and they were all good. Thought I'd get in the car and see about starting it up afterwards....didn't start. Same thing as before everything looks good, I hear the click as the key goes into the ignition switch, turn to position 1 steering column comes out and all lights go on and off as they should. Move to position 2 nothing.

I'm sure I checked the dash and all lights were ok, including "P" showing for Parked.

I tried a dozen or so times and was almost about to give up, then I thought move it to "N" neutral. It started straight up.

I've had another post for Trans Failsafe previously, but I haven't seen that in a long time, so thought it was resolved.

So I'm guessing this failing to start is back to the xyz inhibitor switch being the problem ??

So I got the inhibitor switch out this weekend.....what a Censored Censored that was to get the electrical connector unscrewed from the back of the engine.

Anyway I managed to drill the rivets out and it was really clean inside, no gunk etc. So I cleaned it out anyway and pulled each of the electrical connectors that make contact out a bit, so hopefully if it was just that it should have fixed the issues.

Time will tell. I put it back together again but the rivets I bought weren't soft enough so I split the plastic on one of the holes (it still holds tight though) and then decided to just used nuts and bolts to hold it together with locktite.

Anyway, it all went back together fine and fired up no problems each time I've used it yesterday, so we'll see what happens from here.

Cheers
