Cursed hidden pothole has created a small sidewall bulge in n/s rear tyre - no doubt an mot fail and for my own peace of mind it will be replaced asap. Tyres (Pirelli Scorpion Zero) are less than a year old and have tread remaining depth approx 7-8mm. Planning to fit a new Pirelli to replace the old cheap brand spare, and keep the damaged sidewall tyre as an emergency spare. I'm sure i read somewhere that tyres should be replaced in pairs on the same axle due to risk of damage to the diffs, but surely with 7-8mm depth remaining on the originals the new tyre tread radius difference will be negligible?

As the other tyre on that axle is relatively new with little wear, to me you only need one new tyre, not two.

As above, if the MOT tester can see the bulge in the wall, it will be an MOT fail. If the bulge faced down, you would probably get away with it, as I have never seen a tester remove the spare wheel for inspection, BUT.... would you want to drive on a motorway with a damaged tyre, best to change it.

Think yourself lucky, I did the same with two new AT3's (only a week old) on my D3 when offroading on Fraser Island. Fortunately being in Australia we used to carry 2 spares.

As far as I’m aware the spare is not checked during mot, but point taken. Maybe safer to keep the cheap-brand (undamaged) tyre as the spare after all. 2011MY 4.4TDV8 Autobiography Baltic Blue

not all cars have spares so leave the bulged tyre/wheel at home when you take yours for a MOT.. ... - .- -.

Get them both replaced and chuck the current good used tyre in the spare wheel section

/\ That's what I'd do - 2 new tyres on - chuck the bulging one & use the other off the same axle as the spare.

But I acknowledge that I'm extravagant with tyres as I often drive long distances & want the piece of mind.

^ That’s what I’d do. Tyres (and brakes) are just too important to economise on for the mileage that I do.

Bulging tyre is 3 points plus a fine. Not suitable even as a spare.

Either way a fine or not mot failure or not it is dangerous so get rid is my opinion and replace two and keep the one that is on the car without the bulge as spare as has already been said For me tyres are too important to muck about with
