England 2007 Range Rover Vogue TDV8 Cairns Blue
L322 2007MY Lower Glovebox Stuck OPEN

This might be useful for anyone else with the same problem.

I wanted access to the Passenger Compartment fusebox - so opened the lower glovebox & released the special catch that allows it to open fully downwards.
After finishing with the fusebox, I tried to lift the glovebox to close it, but found it was stuck fully open.

I tried carefully increasing force and applying pressure to the damping mechanism arm, but it wouldn’t move & felt like more force would break it.
Using a torch into the glovebox rear, it appeared that the black toothed rack that should move past a white gear wheel as part of the opening damping mechanism was stuck.

After “googling” the issue, I discovered nobody had reported the same issue (but many had the glovebox stuck shut & locked !). Not helpful !

Due to the door being stuck open, access to the damping mechanism from underneath wasn’t possible.
In the end, I realised access might be possible via the dash end panel – which I discovered was held in via 4 very tight push-fit trim clips. Using a few plastic trim tools I managed to pry the trim panel off, 1 clip at a time. I was too lazy to bother disconnecting the battery to allow the passenger airbag switch to be disconnected, so rotated the panel to allow the glovebox damper to be seen.

It appeared the rack had come too far through the guide it normally runs through, causing it to jam. The rack end was slightly “skew” & jammed against the glovebox side of the guide (cream coloured part).Unfortunately no photo with the rack jammed.
Application of some minor sideways pressure to the rack end while gently lifting the glovebox, caused it to re-align & slide back into the guide. The photo shows the rack end in it's correct position well through the guide.

Having learnt from my mistake, I then lifted the glovebox until the special catch re-engaged.

It was easy to re-align the trim panel clips with their relevant locating holes by moving the panel up / down & forwards / backwards until each clip was partly in & then pushing it into place (the clips don’t all align on their own !).

Glovebox finally fully shut & panic over Very Happy Paul,
