Thatcham tracker

Well I have finally dived into the Range Rover world. I have a 63 plate 4.4 Vogue SE. So I have moved home from the Disco 3 forum to here. Already I need help.
Direct Line insurance have told me that they will only insure my vehicle against theft if I actuate the Thatcham Tracker. Never heard of this before. How, and should I do this. Do all insurances demand this.
Many thanks.

Before MY 2015 when LR started 'In Control Secure', trackers were from outside sources, but LR specified that only certain suppliers would not cause problems with the car's electrical systems. In 2013 I think it was "LR Trackstar" through Eurowatch UK, but as it was up to buyers whether or not to get a tracker one cannot be sure that your car has one. Ideally the seller would have told you and, if there is one, supplied the details so you can get the registration transferred to yourself and pay any necessary subscription.

So maybe start by asking the seller. I don't know if Eurowatch still exist, there have been mergers and name changes in that sector, but if the seller can't help you could search for them and see what they say. They may be wary of dealing with anyone who is not their registered keeper. Typically insurers would want a certificate of installation from the tracker company and evidence that the subscription has been paid.

I don't know if all insurers insist on trackers, mine have. Unfortunately RRs have a bad record for theft. Only Range Rovers since 1988

Hi
I am insured with DirectLine as well and they insisted I got the tracker activated. Salesman tried to sell me a tracker install but a quick check of the documentation found one had already been installed. The one I have is the Trackstar by teletracnavman. It's specifically designed for Land Rovers (not sure what's different though).
If you know which tracker you have just call them up and get it activated.

I did an online quote with Direct Line, much cheaper than voice contact. Online there was no mention of trackers. Go compare, loads of quotes, no mention of trackers. I have emailed trackstar anyway. Thanks Guys.

I had the same when i bought mine a couple of weeks back, Direct line insisted it had to have a tracker fitted

I downloaded the certificate from the 'my in control' website and that was enough, I didnt actually have to show i had an active subscription (although one came with the car)

I bet they wouldnt pay up if it wasn t active though !!

I’m with SAGA - they didn’t require one.

Your username implies you’d be eligible Whistle

I couldn’t wait to be old enough as they are the only company I could find that offer unlimited European cover.

I’m with AXA and they didn’t ask for a tracker.

I left direct line for this reason, now with the AA who do not require it.

Tried Go Compare, none of the big boys on there mentioned trackers.

None of my recent insurance quotes asked for trackers on my 2017 AB and was never asked when I had the Westie either.

I could activate the incontrol secure fracker and pay the subscription but chose not to after an interesting conversation with the dealer I bought it from. The gist of the conversation was that trackers only benefit the insurance companies as it gives them a chance to recover the vehicle.

However, unless your FFRR is particularly special to you (and I know some are) would you really want it back after some low life has ditched it somewhere and your insurer insists it's good as new after handing it to their repairers for a few weeks. I know I probably wouldn't want to keep mine and would end up selling it pretty quickly.

His view was, unless you can get a stupidly cheap deal and save a few hundred quid every year on insurance over and above the cost of the tracker subscription then gap insurance makes more sense. He likened the tracker subscription as you paying to insure the insurer to help them get your car back when you're already paying them to cover your car against theft. 2017 4.4 SDV8 Autobiography

I move from DL because they were probably the only company insisting on a Tracker. Got - 2017 SDV8 Autobiography in Loire Blue
Had- 2008 TDV8 Vogue SE in Java black
Had - 2007 S/C in Stornoway Grey

I asked about a tracker when I called the insurance company to add the deployable side steps as a modification (you can never be too careful with insurance companies….) and they said it was usually only compulsory for cars worth over £80k. MY23 Panamera E-Hybrid
