I was chatting to a few mechanics yesterday who had congregated at my mates garage and it became clear that changing the oil in the front and rear differentials on the L322 is different than most cars....

I'm a sad git and have read the workshop manual, my OCD means I have to know how my cars work...!

This is the statement that could cause problems....




I don't know how much, if any, damage it will do running with too much oil in the diffs but they have said it for a reason...

It might be worth mentioning this to your mechanic if you let a garage do it....

This applies to all the L322 models I have a Workshop Manual for but check you own model before changing the fluid.

This does not effect the L405 where they went back to the old way....

I have seen many incidents over the years where people have over filled engines and other pieces of equipment.

Said machinery will be designed so that the correct amount of oil will be cooled during operation. Usually through things such as contact with the equipment casing which is then cooled by air.
Too much oil results in too much energy in heat form to be dissipated in this manner, thus the temps rise leading to problems with said machinery.

Even with an oil cooling system, excess oil can overload the equipment's oil cooling capacity.

Whatever equipment you are re-filling always find out the correct amount the makers reccomend.

When doing my diffs I found that filling to the point that it drips out is almost exactly the same volume as the recommended volume of fluid.

I guess you only come unstuck when you cannot get the recommended amount of fluid back in  .
Experience is the only genuine knowledge, but as time passes, I have forgotten more than I can remember

There are dry fill and wet fill quantities too to beware of in the book.

If you are getting a garage to do it it’s worth buying and giving them the correct quantity of fluid and telling them that it’s the proper volume and won’t fully fill the diff….. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜
