Just in the process of looking at a couple of L322's of moderate mileages. The dealers offer warranties some of which you have to pay for and you can buy extensions etc. Anyone have any experience with these particularly with this vintage of RR?

We are in the same boat.

What concerns me is the "wear and tear" comments that seem to litter the terms and conditions. In theory, they could argue that anything that breaks has wear and tear on it.

My strategy is to put at least some of the payment on credit card (Section 75 protection). Some dealers actually state NO CREDIT CARDS - I wouldn't go anywhere near those. Some so called warranties also state you need to get the car back to the supplying "dealer". Others allow you to take the car to any VAT registered garage. Then there are the clauses that say you may need to pay for the investigation work... It is a minefield.

Haven't got any real world personal experience, hopefully some on here can comment on what happens in reality.

Yes the car I'm looking at they are offering a 2yr warranty in addition to their standard 3 months for about £600 and it has a max payout of £2000 per claim but you can make multiple claims via any VAT registered garage. Also they take a deposit via credit card.

As you say until you make a claim you won't really know what you're dealing with and the reviews are always mixed, usually left by disgruntled rather than happy customers

We were going to view a car tomorrow, but it has been pulled from sale as it had too many problems, so being sent to auction. The warranty they offered was £4000 limit, unlimited claims, but only up to the purchase price. We would have extended it if we went for the car.

The sales guy did recommend to use Independents, rather than LR dealers due to the labour charges. I did feel more comfortable with this one as it was a large national dealership. Just a shame the car was a dog when they inspected it. On the other hand, fair play to them.. I am sure some other "dealers" would have bodged it and happily offloaded it on to someone.

Self insure. Warranty companies can be total and not pay out
The only one worth looking at is the AA Garage and Parts Cover as a sort of half way cover

I don't have any actual experience with them yet but maybe try warranty wise, at least for a quote. You can specify your own labour rate which means you can of course spec the warranty for main dealer rates if that's your thing.

My car is still covered by LR extended, if your car is less than 10yr and 100k and has a full service history then you should be able to get covered there... Bank on way more than a few hundred quid though, around 140/mo for mine which is almost 10 years old. I haven't claimed on that either but the car has always been under LR warranty its entire life and numerous claims have been made according to a printout I have. The other benefit here is, you take it to MD and they deal with the warranty side.

I spoke to LR Warranties and they will likely sell you a warranty subject to a "multipoint inspection by the LR retailer". They didn't specify whether the retailer had to be a main dealer but guessing probably will be. When you have the clean inspection they pass that on to the warranty department and they call you with a quote for the LR Warranty.

That's right, I remember reading that somewhere, if there's been a lapse in LR warranty then an inspection needs to he carried out at LR before they will activate a new warranty.

Also worth bearing in mind, if you go the warranty wise route and you pay by installments you cannot claim for 1 month and 1000 miles covered (third hand info from a friend who just took this warranty on a disco 4). If you pay the year up front I believe this restriction is lifted.

Had a £1k limit warranty on my previous l322, paid for a new steering rack . Have one since I bought my l405 , touch wood never needed . If it helps you sleep at night then fine . On the flip side I’ve claimed more times on my aa cover for parts and labour, had 2 alternators fitted , only cost me £40 a pop . You pays your money etc ..

With my LR warranty I believe the single claim limit is up to the purchase price of the car so ultimately should cover any unlikely catastrophic failure.

With warranty wise, the claim limit is capped at 6k which still ought to cover big stuff.

As the cars get older, warranty options are more difficult to obtain.

My current LR warranty expires in October, the car isnt at the cutoff age of 10 until December so I am hoping I can renew in October for another year otherwise I'll likely go warranty wise who will cover it until it's 12.

Definitely a "you pays your money..." situation but I doubt £1200 goes far at a MD or even a decent specialist if something big goes wrong.

Last time I was in the LR space was with an 05 RRS a long time ago and it seemingly came with a default £1k bill any time it went near a garage so imo whilst I can cover it with a warranty I am keen to do so. The unknown I suppose is whether or not it actually pays out when you need it to.
