insurance renewal increases

just got mine - gone up nearly £200 which is about 20%

no claims since last year

spoke to a friend in the insurance business

a) bad winter with many claims both vehicles and domestic
b) japanese tsunami
c) ambulance chasing solicitors
d) increase in whiplash claims

apparently lloyds motor syndicates are looking at £90 million + losses

i mentioned about changing insurers - he said you will get a better price for year 1 as a new customer but prices will rise in year 2

i asked about changing every year - he just laughed - as all the insurance databases are linked they soon see the pattern emerge and you will no longer be offered preferential year 1 discounts

his company no longer offer motor insurance to private individuals - its that bad!

he also mentioned something about claims settlements even when you are the innocent party - how both 'sides' reach an 'agreement' to share liability

Surely you shouldn't be subsidising other peoples claims to that extent if your circumstances haven't changed?

I heard somewhere that the "big" insurance companies are paying out £110 for every £100 they take in premiums, so maybe they've decided to stop the rot! Censored Got - 2017 SDV8 Autobiography in Loire Blue

Another tough year for the Names at Lloyds then..........
On the premiums front I was surprised that mine didn't go up this year, I was expecting it to having changed from the RRS to the FFRR 2018 Mini Countryman Cooper S E All4 PHEV in Melting Silver - it’s whisper quiet in EV and polluter modes

seems that we all 'share' the liabilities of the companies?

just be very careful with these sites was my friends advice

the quoted prices are usually a 'core' price - then when you get into detail they start loading for non standard extra's

prudential tried to get me to pay an extra for tinted glass even though it was factory fitted - but an EXTRA on the car therefore non standard!

even 20" wheels as opposed to 19" are an extra - so would be RSE/side steps/towbar (watch out for towing get out clauses)

if they can 'load' a premium they will

the problem for many RR or other car owners is that unless they bought the car from new they do not know what constitutes extra's?

i mentioned some time ago that you could buy a 'chipped/remapped' car and unless you were told about it you would be driving a modified car and your insurance would be invalid!

read somewhere that approx 40% of claims for subaru imprezas are rejected

In fairness to "some" insurance companies (I'm with Admirals' multi-car policy with me, the wife and my son on the policy) they don't all go down the route of invalidating policies for undeclared mods. My son fitted a set of daft, KTM orange wheels to his car, and despite being told to tell Admiral, he chose not to.
To cut a long story short, he crashed and the car was a write-off and when Admiral were settling they mentioned the wheels and that fact they hadn't been declared to them. Instead of invalidating the policy, they too off the amount they would have charged for the policy change - about £25, so they're not all bad - just most of them! fair enough to Admiral - though i suppose if the case had gone before the insurance ombudsman they would not have had a case to answer?

i once had cause to use the insurance ombudsman in a domestic claim and they were superb - the insurance industry seems to really 'fear' them

if in doubt first port of call for me would always be the insurance ombudsman Thumbs Up

I suppose it also depends on wether the mod (in the insurance co's opinion) had a significant contribution to the claim, so I guess an undeclared engine mod for instance might not be looked upon so "reasonably"? Got - 2017 SDV8 Autobiography in Loire Blue

also be careful with off road use - i had to check as i frequently go off road

if you go to 'off road' courses you will not be covered under your standard policy

and i'd not be sure about recreational off roading as in 'organised' days out with a club/forum?

also be careful of your liability when towing other vehicles that get 'stuck' even on road

this was discussed in length on one of the landrover forums during the bad winter - someone fell foul of insurance when the vehicle they were pulling out of a ditch got damaged!

they would throw the claim out of the door!

shall we say an acquaintance has a suburu dealership Smile insurers automatically assume every subaru is modified!

Mine went up by £23 this year which apparently is the difference between insuring my old 07 HSE and the new 07 Vogue SE. Quite why trim makes a difference is beyond me. Different value on the car I could see but once over £30k that makes no difference apparently. Same premium for mine whether declared as 30k value of 40k.

I'm with Swiftcover and have been for about 5 years. Probably not the cheapest but they were great when my wife got shunted a while back. Strangely though they refuse point blank to insure a re-mapped vehicle. You can have all the bling in the world but no power upgrades.
