+ve wire from alt/starter motor/battery replacement CLOSED

Good Morning,

A newbie here and 3 months into my 1st L322 and this site is an utter goldmine of info.

Has anyone replaced the +ve wiring from alternator to starter motor to battery?

I have taken the old alternator out and the +ve (red) cable hadn't been screwed on properly which resulted in the rubber boot melting completely, the casing around the +ve screw thread melted and the +ve wire brittle and dare i say crunchy to touch.

I have a replacement cable ordered and the local garage has quoted £550 (circa 10 hours) to replace it.

If anyone has done it before, is it a DIY job?

I've never done it your engine but I can't see it taking anywhere near 10 hours, however it is routed you can pull a fish wire through with the old one and pull the new one back through...

10 hours seems like 8 1/2 too long to me... Thumbs Up Pete

Do it yourself mate. I had to pay some one to do my alternator but when it went again I thought I'd do it myself. Had it all off swapped and replaced within 2 hours. Longest part was trying to get the viscous nut to break with out the correct tool

Yeah, had the alternator out and yes my knuckles suffered colossal damage whilst taking the viscous fan off Censored

Going to try the fishing wire trick as i can't see where the cable goes behind the engine after it attaches to the starter motor behind the front right wheel.

You would think the alternator was made of gold at how well they have hidden it away! Rolling Eyes "Things don't just fall off in your hand.....unless you own an L322!"

I would hope they quote it based on autodata or whatever it is called. I've not done it on this car but even on my daughters Golf MK2 it took me a while to route it properly, and deal with the various clips and taking parts off and on to get it to go in place. Clearly the owner before us took a shortcut and just did a throw it in and hope it sticks job...

Having dismantled the dashboard now, and seeing how some of the British engineers working on designing and building these cars thing, that quote doesn't surprise me at all.

My mistake in typing it. Would have been interesting seeing actual fishing line slicing through the rest of the cables though!

Cheers Bl4ckD0g - the replacement does have 3 of those clips so borrowing a mates endoscope to follow the current setup so I know where things go.

So...

Apologies for the delay in updating. Kids off school etc etc..

Cable replaced but it wasn't running around the back, it actually runs under the air intake across the front bottom (ooh er..) and then back to the starter motor and alternator.

Part number is YMS 500280 if anyone needs it (fyi - different models / years / etc. have different parts so check first).

That however, has not fixed my original issue which is that when i am driving the Rangie park up and then restart it within a couple of hours (engine still warm and temp needle above zero) i start getting the blackpool illuminations.

This only happens when pondering along under no pressure. If i continuously tap the accelerator or brakes or on a bendy road its fine... Confused

Time to check the fuel pumps. I do get a whole load of error codes on my iCarSoft V2.0 tool but the vast majority are panic codes coming from the engine going into limp mode. The two that stand out are the Fuel Pressure Line too low and Injector Pressure too low.

Have you checked the alternator is definitely doing what it should? A friend of mine had all manner of problems with a 2007 TDV8 and it turned out it was the output from the alternator messing around... it was an alternator that hadn't long been replaced too! 2002 4.6 Vogue SE - Alveston Red with Lightstone Leather

Thanks @Dhallworth - will check that.

Also going to check the serpentine belt too, as the issue only happens when the engine is at running temp, i wondered if the belt was slipping when it heats up. I know it took me ages to remove the viscous fan (without the specialist tools) and therefore i had the belt slipping when i hit things with a hammer Surprised "Things don't just fall off in your hand.....unless you own an L322!"

Sorry, thought i had closed this.

Update: Very embarrassingly the fault was a flat tyre..... i know - what a muppet.

Turns out p/o had changed the wheels and bypassed the sensors so that they remained at a default pressure. Then when the tyre went flat the cars ECU's thought something serious was happening because as far as the readings were stating the tyres were fine.
