Help needed!! Td6

Hi all we are currently on holiday and driving back from the beach the other engine made a bang and lost power top speed about 30mph. Looking under the bonnet the dipstick has blown out and some oil has splattered out. It seems be be making a strange noise but runs smoothly. No warning lights on The dash or black smoke. We are stuck away and have called the AA but any advice would be great. Thanks in advance

If the dipstick 'blew out' you could also have an issue with the oil separator / breather, this could add to your woes
Sticking turbo vanes / turbo actuator failure also comes to mind, although the 'bang' and smooth running is puzzling, but if max power gets you 30mph as in Haylands post - not enough air getting in or exhaust gases can't get out. These faults could allow smooth running at idle, but not once you apply throttle.

All I can think of at the mo, would love to know eventual outcome when fault found.

Random thought - was anything on the road thrown up into the engine bay, causing damage somewhere?

Thanks all for your advice. The AA has not yet arrived but if they are unable to fix it, I will get it recovered to Devon 4x4 as they aren’t that far away. As far as I know nothing flew up into the engine bay.

Although the engine is running smoothly it sounds like there is a hole in the exhaust but there isn’t.
