Roof rack hearing aid

As some will be aware, I was very pleased to snag myself a genuine roof rack for the fatty.

The seller warned me that it howled a bit at speed and he was not wrong! So after a fruitless search for the holy grail that is the G4 grp moulding I resorted to CAD (Cardboard Aided Design) and through an iterative process got to this:

After a short road trip to prove the concept, I set about making some mounting brackets from 1.5mm stainless strip:

With them mounted and dimensions checked for the eleventy-tenth time, I converted the CAD into real CAD and got it cut in 3mm acrylic.

This is the result:

Not perfect - it could do with a bit more upsweep on the leading edge at the ends but for less than £80 all in I am pretty pleased and can now hear the radio again! Bish.

Good to know the expedition rack fits a 2010+ car though, I've had two suppliers tell me it doesn't! Still on the hunt for one for mine 2011 VSE 4.4 TDV8 Santorini / Ivory

I know the chap I bought my rack from years ago, who got it direct from LR and fitted at the dealer, said on the drive home he nearly turned around and took it back due to the noise!
The cheap and quick 'fix' is pipe insulation/lagging around the leading edge which stops the noise enough but will not silence it completely but makes it driveable up to motorway speeds.
Even boarding out with Wiska/rhino board like the G4 examples made no difference to mine (thought it might dampen the vibration a bit).
There was hopes of group buy being set up of a copy made of the G4 deflector but it never came to anything.
I started making up a G4 like fibreglass molding but never finished it...one day when I have some time!
That looks a neat solution and would be a lot better than the insulation ...probably wil give better mpg too. My rack stays off now unless I need it...2 mpg extra without lol!
