Rust prevention etc

Hi there,

What do you guys do to prevent rust on sensitive spots?

I've been thinking about painting the exhaust (mainly because of all the stone chips over the years), tow hook etc with black hammerite and maybe also on other spots. Is this a good idea or what have you done to yours?

I live in Sweden with salty winters...the climate here is great for rust and the L322 2011 tdv8 (4.4) clearly needs help to cope in these conditions.

Any ideas/suggestions are much appreciated. Its summer now, but soon enough winters coming Wink

Cheers

I paint all the underside vulnerable parts with grease every couple of years and spray the whole underside with engine oil every year. Result is no rust at all which is quite remarkable considering l live next to the beach and the car is subject to salt spray every winter.
I don’t think you need to paint the exhaust, mine is 17 years old and still sound even though it looks slightly corroded.

First job I had done when I bought mine at 3/4 years old was to get all the plastic liners sills etc removed and then steamed cleaned and treated with Dinitrol.
6/7 years later and it stil looks like new underneath.
Not cheap, but a good long term investment because it was always going to be a keeper.

Thanks for the replies!

As of now I've emailed a bunch of shops looking to proper rust proof my car. A brush of Hammerite is all good probably but no comparison to a full treatment...

Moving to Spain would be nice but they dont have moose burgers there so I'll stay here for the time being Very Happy

I reason that rust repairs are pricey, better spend some hard earned cash on preventative care and save some trouble.

Is Dinitrol the real deal? Is it as good as google says? Any firsthand experiences on your cars?

Cheers,

I used Aquaseal when I rebuilt my 1963 series 2 and it remained until I sold it on rust free for the next 10years without further treatment despite all lot of abuse in all conditions. Developed for salty environments so may be worth a punt. https://aquasteel.co.uk/

Definite vote for aquasteel here, I used to work offshore on vessels and platforms, the ONLY antirust / rust treatment that worked was aquasteel. The most hostile of environments (typically hydraulic pipework on our winch launch and recovery for an ROV), constantly exposed to salt spray, baking in the sun etc. Aquasteel literally apply and forget, it's brilliant. BMW i3 Electric Car

Not sure yet. Only did it about 5 months ago. Still looks like the day I put on at the moment but a winter will be the test. They do say it will need redoing but as it's so easy and quick to do that's not a problem. 2011 Vogue SE TDV8

Aquaseal seems very promising, however it seems hard to come by here in Sweden.

I've called around at a few different Dinitrol centers and will probably do a full "rust check" and do whatever they recommend. I want to keep this car for a looong time.

Cheers for all the advice and suggestions Fuji White 2011, 4.4 TDV8 Vogue SE
