Warranties and other ramblings

Morning all, as I approach retirement, I’m musing over a few possibilities as to my motoring options when I’ll be a poor pensioner Big Cry

So having looked around for a vehicle that satisfies my desire for all the things a FFRR would give me, I’ve decided on, drum roll, a newer FFRR than my current one Thumbs Up

This leads me on to my choices, I’d like a L405, preferably an AB but a nicely appointed VSE would suffice, or a very, very high spec Vogue might even do at a push.

The next decision is engine size. My heart says 4.4 but my head keeps telling me 3.0 for cheaper running costs, tax fuel etc.

Given the apparent “issue” with 3.0 crankshaft failures, I’d want to have a very comprehensive warranty to cover this, should the worst happen, so I’m leaning towards an LR approved used car but I’m keen to know which, if any, of the independent warranty companies are reliable enough to consider, even just for this 1 possible event?

Opinions gladly accepted. Got - 2017 SDV8 Autobiography in Loire Blue

I should add that my list of “must haves” would be, in no particular order, pan roof, cooled seats and active cruise control, changeable ambient lighting and soft close doors, hence my lower limit of a VSE. Got - 2017 SDV8 Autobiography in Loire Blue

Last time I used an after market warranty was Warranty Direct and they were superb. Never had an issue claiming with them.

You can call them up and ask them what's covered, or for something like the crankshaft I'd be tempted to do it by email so you had it in writing from them.

They were recommended to me as being the easiest to deal with from a garage point of view and from a customers point of view but that's only what I was told, I've got nothing to back it up.

Have a gander on the Disco forum, there's probably more about crankshafts and warranty over there Smile

There is a lot about cranks on the Disco forum Smile. Two things to check:

1/ The LR extended warranty doesn't cover the crank AFAIK.
2/ WD recently changed hands - there's a discussion about it on the disco forum https://disco3.co.uk/forum/warranty-direct...t=warranty 2016 Skoda Octavia VRS Estate

Jeezo Alan, thought you’d never shift into a newer one . Thumbs Up Mine will be available in the next year, but by that time will be around 100k miles. I too had the thought about warranty, a few pals swear by motor easy , they pre inspect before offering cover . I went warrantywise and have never needed to claim thus far . I’ve always used a wee bolt on via the AA, which covers 5 claims per year @ £500 each, they even cover batteries! Pal of mine had a mapped 3 litre, said it went well enough .

I have an RAC warranty on my car, I had a claim last week and to be fair they gave the go a head straight away and they have paid the garage.
The only issue was they would not pay for the belts as they are a wearing part and they docked 45 minutes of labour to fit then but all in all I was very happy. Range Rover Vogue SE 4.4 TDV8

It's absolutely stunning mate, it isn't really gold at all.

If the worry about the crank problem is what is pushing you towards paying for a warranty then the 4.4 might well be a better bet. The perceived extra fuel and tax costs (5mpg difference on 10K miles = £400 and tax differerence is <£100 a year) is a lot less than £1500 for a warranty.
Buy a 4.4 - nobody buys a Rangerover because it's a sensible thing to do!

Wise words indeed, plus when you have had a shot in the 4.4, it's all you'll want.. alot quicker than it looks , plus handles waaay better than the 322

That looks lovely, not as gold as some pics I've seen. I guess it would need to be seen in the metal as it were to really know what it looks like. I remember years ago my brother in law went to look at a FL2 (at night, in the rain) and he was convinced it was silver. That was until he woke of the following day to find it was in fact gold, well platinummy!
Does it have any extra options over and above the usual VSE?

The tax difference that I've seen is much more (almost double for the 4.4), so it does have a large impact on the running costs. Got - 2017 SDV8 Autobiography in Loire Blue

Ful pan roof/ heated/cooled seats/825w stereo, all black with light grey roof inside, dark wood . I’m due a change next year, so haven’t started looking yet to be fair. Has the ambient lights you can change too. . Glad to give you a gander , just to help decision process, I’ll either sell it here or chop it in .

I’ll get some more photos in the sunshine cause it looks different depending on the light , really is nice , one of the rare ones like Nara.

I think that's just the pre 2015 models and even then it's just a couple of hundred pounds difference which isn't much compared to a warranty - you can't whack a V8 Smile
