TDV8 4.4. rpm occasionally drops out (8th gear)

2011 TDV8 4.4. L322
150.000km / 93,250 miles

Hi guys,

For some time I have problems with the TDV8 4.4. 448DT engine. Can't find an existing topic here or using the wrong key words... When driving 120 km/h (60mph) on the highway, the rpm occasionally drops out intermittetly. Stuttering once in a while. Occurs in 8th gear. As soon as I use the S position and switch manually back to 7th gear, there is nothing wrong. There is also nothing wrong if I go above 140-150 km/h (90mph). It seems that a part or sensor is getting the wrong signal and that the signal is interupted for a second. Can't find an error in iCarsoft LR V2.0.

What could it be? I am thinking of:
- Camshaft sensor (had this before with a 1999 BMW 528i, same feeling)
- Crank position sensor (had this before with a 1999 BMW 528i, same feeling)
- Something with the diesel supply (changing fuel filter but don't think this is the problem)
- Air mass meter (but then the problem must also occur with other gears/rpm and that does not happen)

Before I replace all these parts, anyone had an idea or the same problem?

Notice: ZF Service changed the oil last week. Everything was perfect.

I put up with what I described as a cough at 75-80 mph, but the dealer did the mentioned TSB software update a few years ago and it completely cured it. Been fine ever since.

Thanks for that. I will go to the local LR shop to check if LTB00454v2 is updated in my one. When was the technical bulletin published? Update: 11-May-2012

Maybe they can also check if the crankshaft position sensor is logging errors interuption for the last month. I have red about that subject but can't find it again Confused

Today I was at the local LR workshop. My RR was not updated with LTB00454v2 so they runa diagnostic test. No failure was recognizable/logged, no failures for the crankshaft position sensor so that saves me a little €500 (446 pounds). The update cost me € 64 (57 pounds) so hopefully my problem is solved...

To be specific:
They re-programmed the PCM (Powertrain Control Module, part LR023239) with the newest software (LTB00454V2).

Technical bulletin LTB00454v2 says it will solve the problem when driving between 60 mph and 90 mph, with an ambient temperature above 10 degrees and in 6th, 7th or 8th gear.
