Can't answer for the Dealer greed question, but there is a bit more around current prices in this thread:

Used prices have been going up a lot recently, up to 20-25% according to what I’ve read. Dealers tend to review their prices regularly and adjust them, used to be down over a period but it’s been the opposite in 2021.

So we are not wanting our fatties to increase in value then? Just kidding. I know what you mean. This is good if you are selling, but not buying... obviously.

Shortage of new cars, plus low consumer confidence has led to a greater demand in used cars, hence the increase in prices |

Some very good opinions so far guys, thanks. I'm hoping this is just a temporary trend.

I’m no expert, but I think the more a car is worth, the more it’s affected by price fluctuations, in that if you hold on to yours a bit, like you say, if prices drop, the newer car ought to drop more than your current one.

I’ve had mine 12 months now and if it was on a main dealer forecourt the it would be about the same price, maybe £1-2k less at most, so yes values have gone up. Butwhen you look at trade in values (Motorway is a good guide) then it’s lost £7-8k....but I was expecting to average £12k a year over 3 years so I’m fine with that. As has been said, like with houses, strong values aren’t any good to you if you’re upgrading as the gap just gets bigger. I’m really happy with the car and really pleased to report it’s been fault free. I thought by buying a 12 month old car is stand the bast chance to it not driving me mad with issues and I was right. Im still convinced the SDV8 is the one to have, performance is acceptable for the size of vehicle and anything faster wouldn’t suit it and economy is better than expected. The main reason for choosing it though was the anti roll and I wouldn’t have one without it as it rolls enough as it is! I always have it in Dynamic on A Roads, the ride is still good and I find the reduced movement makes it feel more comfortable. I bought it because we needed the rear seat width to get 2 x tall teenage boys and a baby seat in comfortably and it is excellent as a family carrier. If I didn’t need that space, then something like a Panamera Turbo Estate would suit me better, but overall I’m happy for now. MY23 Panamera E-Hybrid MY19 SDV8 Autobiography - Sold |

People's bank accounts are awash with cash, no shops open for months on end, no pubs open, no foreign holidays, nothing else to spend cash on but either a replacement house or car, hence tge step change in both.

Thanks Martin, very helpful indeed. I think the 4.4 SDV8 might be the way to go as there seems to be a very good selection out and they do seem reasonable priced, even with the direction of this thread to determine prices.
