Jersey 2019 Range Rover Autobiography 5.0 SC V8 Santorini Black
New car day

Just taken delivery of a Santorini Black P525. I'm completely blown away. I've got long Audi experience (SQ7, RS6 etc), but really impressed with the car on all fronts: tech, lux, general feeling of opulence and very good handover from dealer. Very happy to join the Full Fat RR club!

The car has Scorpion Verde S+M. I drive my cars to Switzerland about a dozen times a year. I've always bought winter tyres (we have a very steep drive that's usually covered in snow/ice), and the Audis have managed the drive well. Are the Scorpion's up to the job, or should I price full winters?

Thanks all,

Phil.

Welcome to the forum & congratulations on your purchase.

Tough question on the Pirellis - I think the Verde's are classed as an all season tyre - so it's going to be marginal. They should be fine on fresh snow, but compacted & ice are more of a challenge. Whether that warrants a set of full winters though is questionable.

Switzerland also has no mandatory requirement for winters tyres - map
I've run winters for years, but would be inclined to give the Pirellis a go I think......but maybe if you are back & forth that much, then it's worth the investment ?

This could be the first time I've ever NOT outright recommended winter tyres Laughing

Do you have chains ?
I bought two sets of Thule K77's but never had to use then (yet)

Thanks Alistair - great feedback!

I do carry chains, but with winters, I've never needed them. Think I might give it a go!

Markets that demand winter tyres means our All Season boots, as capable as they are, are not accepted. The last time I looked that meant German and Swiss destinations but I can’t remember, honestly. I also drive to the Alps and the difference between ordinary and winters is chalk and chees, its not just up the mountain in snow its also when 1 degree C and wet. Bought a set of new take offs from Duckworth and fitted winters so just swap rims when needed. letters not necessarily in the right order

M+S not S&M. I'm assuming general car pics not tyre pics?

Sorry Andy - I tried it to post it in last reply. Here you go. And say hi when you come over to Jersey. I've discovered that the RR is perfect for Jersey because you can see over the hedges and drive into a field if you meet anyone on a lane!

Very smart Phil, I like that a lot! Snap on the wheel front Thumbs Up Nice. Last time I was across was 2014 in the 5.0 s/c L322. This is near Corey Castle:

I know what you mean about the hedges and fields. Worst thing is meeting a bus coming the other way! Current chariot I'll be driving across via Condor ferries:

That looks fab Shocked . On the tyre question, I have always doubted the ability of winter tyres but during heavy snow this year my Disco4 had Cooper allterrains and my 4 motion transporter had dunlop winters. The transporter would have drove rings around the D4 Shocked . One one particularly steep hill I drove straight past a brand new d5 that was really struggling Mr. Green

I was convinced that winters are the way forward, so much so that I am on the lookout for a spare set for my rangie for our winter trips to Aviemore and I can only imagine that Switzerland get more "winter" than Scotland Thumbs Up Paul
