Hey guys, so I've come across what appears to be a very well maintained 5.0l SC L322. It's been maintained from new, yearly at <10k mile intervals, looks to be in very good condition and the most recent service has covered the fluids and filters. All services have been performed by a Land Rover main dealership with stamps / online history to back it up.

However....It's not had the chains, tensioners or coupler replaced.

Would this be a hard no at a touch over 100k miles? It's pretty high budget wise on the face of it but model wise ticks most of the boxes.

Opinions & Thoughts appreciated

It's no reason not to buy it, a good bargaining point... As long as you are aware of it it will be easy to catch in time...

Thanks Haylands. If you catch it at the rattling stage is it a far cheaper fix?

Mine went at about 108k miles. I say "went", I later found out that it was the right bank jumped a couple of teeth and the restricted performance bong activated. If you want a dealer to sort it, expect an £8k bill. An indie will be much less but still maybe half, and I struggled to find one that would take it on at all let alone in short order?? But if it jumps any more and and the engine detonates then its a new engine time and that's lots more. I'd say if the car is what you want at the right money then have it, but put by a fighting fund in case you get unlucky. Thanks MPx, at around 18k and 105k miles, I’m thinking I look elsewhere. Sticking a fighting fund aside is all well and good but the cars worthless to me in a repair shop.

I’d rather carry on hunting and deal with one that’s already had it done or as a last resort abandon the 5L SC

A good indi is charging around £2,000 for both chains and guides, it is not a dealer only job... It's not a hard job, just time consuming...

Three teeth slipped is the max, go four and the engine is gone... you do get some notice and the rattle at start up is the early warning...  Pete

When everyone was using the dealers it was, then lots of indies invested in the tools required and the price tumbles, it's worth doing the injectors at the same time.....

And it doesn't matter when you catch it price wise, as long as it's before the engine shows you it's con rods..!! Pete

That's interesting to know from Haylands that it could be about the 2k mark. I thought about £4000 from an Indi was the usual. I've seen the job done on Youtube and I always worry about the bag of nuts, bolts and clips left over and the mechanic stood there scratching his head wondering how he had so many bits left over.  Range Rover 2002 P38 4.6 Vogue

Just another 2 quick questions for this thread.

1) Is it just the early models that suffer with this or all of them from 2009 to 2012. Or, did they realise the problem and then make the modification for the end of the run, say 2011 to 2012???

2) Do the Jags that use this engine have the same problems or is it just the RR? Perhaps due to the weight of the car and the stress being put on it.

I had the chains done on mine when I got it, and it was under 2k. A good local indy did it for me. Have a search through my early posts as I put some more details in there somewhere.

He's no longer in business as he's moved on, but he wasn't phased by it, it just took a while. 10 hours IIRC.

I'd have no problem buying another 5.0 without the chains done, as long as the price was right. Factor in the cost at purchase, and then keep an ear out. You may never need them doing, as there are a lot out there with higher mileages that are just fine.

When mine came apart, it was only the tensioner on one bank that was worn. The other one was perfect. Obviously changed them both (and all the chains etc), but it just goes to show they're not all going to be knackered at xx miles..

I take it that this is a job you would be happy to undertake if I purchased a 5.0 in the future??? Would rather take preventive measures and not have any worries in the future. I would want to enjoy the experience of driving the FFRR and not just be waiting for the 'Big Bang' LOL

Also, have you done this for other customers and what is a ball park figure???
