Having recently upgraded for the 4k from an old Pioneer plasma, picture is incredible, but the sound is dreadful. The Pioneer is great for the sound as there is a speaker array built in . Am not looking for money no object, but first hand experience of mid-range kit.

Old Pioneer Plasmas were designed to be a completely self contained system the speakers on them were pretty darned good!

The LG OLEDS are excellent screens, they also provide the screens for Sony, but theirs are considerably cheaper because they don't spend anything on the sound (also Sony use their own image processing which makes a difference) - the assumption has been for the last 10 years that when you buy a new TV, you buy a soundbar as well.

That has led to a plethora of terrible quality sound bars filling the market, many of which are just about as good as the speakers that used to come built into a TV. You can easily get an LG sound ar that will run off thew same remote as your TV, and might match its aesthetics perfectly, but its also worth looking at some more functional products such as Sonos or Denon HEOS sounders that will allow you to stream music and other sources to them wirelessly.

As with all these things, you need to find your own balance between cost, size/looks, functionality and performance.

If you have an idea of budget, and any constraints on aesthetics, there will certainly be a lot of suitable options

It really does depend on budget, like most things, but this should give you a good idea of the options and costs. One thing worth thinking about is the height of the soundbar if the TV is on a table/unit as it's highly likely it would obstruct the bottom of the screen. That's why we bought a Cambridge Audio soundable for the TV in the bedroom.

I wouldn't spend a lot (c£1k) on a soundbar as you'd get a much better amplifier/speaker package for a similar outlay. I spent a bit more than that on a 7.1 amp and speakers, but the sound quality is superb. MY23 Panamera E-Hybrid

cheers lads, yes, i have been spoiled for years with the pioneer, to be fair it's still good, just not 4k good. Fair points regards the size. I used to have a 1st gen surround system with a panasonic crt tv many moons ago, might think about wireless solutions though. I'll have a gander . See if richer sounds have any good deals on just now too.

Got the Sonos Beam and surround sound with a couple of Sonos One speakers. Works well for us. Also have Sonos Ones in the kitchen for music . John

Mr Tee - I will highly recommend Bang&Olufsen Beosound Stage. B&O makes probably the best speakers in the world! The Stage gets very good reviews as well, e.g this https://www.t3.com/reviews/bang-olufsen-be...w-soundbar.
(I'm a bit biased here, since we have quite a lot of B&O classic speakers and TVs - just amazing, timeless hifi equipment - and sculptures!)

Regarding the comments above, I would definitely visit my local Richer Sounds if I wanted some hands on time with the options, excellent company.

Cheers monkey , bought the tv from richer when there were no physical visits , my nearest is Edinburgh , so could be a day out for everyone I have a B&W zeppelin air , bit of a fanboy but I have no clue regards sound bars. From the links above , think budget will need to be £500 + for something that I won’t regret buying .

I have a Bose Soundbar 700 which replaced my 5 speaker LG Surround Sound system.

I'm very impressed with it.

It would be easier if you gave us a budget...

I would not consider any sound bar, all of them I have listened to are very poor quality (although many TV's are worse), why not use a stereo system from the likes of Cambridge Audio very good value, but you wont get the centre speaker effect that's important when viewing films.

I purchased a 5.1 system from Richersounds.com that makes the most of the audio from many sources, watching films on DVD is most impressive you can feel the sofa move and you can feel the bass wash over your feet.

Most sources online are pretty poor quality, so take in the old phrase garbage in garbage out!

Indeed, budget wise we are now looking at £500-£1k. I’ve found a local specialist closer than Edinburgh , dealer for some high end kit so I think I’ll arrange an appointment and see where we go from there .

I went for Sonos, the full 5:1 in the lounge. Also got them around the house, 2 in the kitchen, 2 on the landing, 2 in the dining room. 22 Sonos moves for outside and the new Roam for holiday. Using a Sonos bridge to create a mesh network and use it with spotify mainly, but also my own music catalogue.

Its great when we (pre covid) we had parties as the sound was everywhere round the house and outside.

Other manufacturers have similar multiple model speaker line ups so you can select right size for the room and so on. Really pleased with the Sonos, it replaced a Samsung Soundbar that was great, but not a patch on going back to full surround sound. Never trust a skinny chef
