2008 RR 3.6 TDV8 Key Replacement

Hi all.

I'm currently in the process of researching how to go about getting a second key for my Range Rover.

The key which I use at the moment has a flat battery and therefore doesn't lock the car via the buttons/ will set of the alarm when the door is unlocked manually.

Now, I'm not exactly sure how to go about getting a replacement. I've researched online and would like to confirm if this will work.

1. Buy blanks on eBay and cut the key to match.
2. Purchase and use a tool like a CN900 to copy my key.

Am I right? I also have an IID tool but I understand this will not work for MY.

Just looked on line and as mine is a 2006, it looks like we have the same keys.

As for the key with dead battery, fit a new battery, a Lithium button cell type - Number 2032 easily available.

As for buying a new key, cheap. lots around, getting the blade cut is easy and cheap, but although the keys come with 434 Mghz electronics to synch to the car for lock / un-locking, the new key will not have a transponder piece, so you cannot start the car with a new key. Transponder chip has to swopped to the new key.
Transponder chip is approx 2 x 2 x 10mm, and easy to lose.

You would have to go to a dealer or find a good auto locksmith and see what they can do. Hope this helps

Hey Merchy.

Sorry for my delay in replying. You seem to know a lot about the keys and thanks for filling me in with some details!

So let me get this correct in my head.

If I buy the standard key from the likes of eBay with the electronics inside it will lock/ unlock the car when programmed, however it won't start without the transponder?

Where do I get the transponder? Are the purchasable on the likes of eBay or do I need to get one from a redundent L322 06-09 key and then reporgram?

Thanks my friend!

Good evening the answers -

First point, correct, you can synch the new key to the car for the central locking. But without the transponder it will not start the car, or unlock the steering column etc.

Second point - You can buy a blank transponder, but then you need an auto locksmith to programme it for you, or you need an auto key programmer tool.Below are some sample links to get you started, you will have to research to make sure you buy the correct ones. Hope this helps. Thumbs Up
