L322 or L405

I been a company car driver for some years but soon to loose the benefit so seriously considering a TD V8, but with prices between late L322 and early L405’s closing I am interested to know which body type is considered the better car.

My obvious assumption would be the L405 simply due to it benefitting from later engineering and improvements.

But is it a better car in reality? I am more interested in reliability of the engine, power train and chassis than the later connectivity or sat nav and certainly not adaptive cruise control.

What are the thoughts, L322 or L405?

In every objective way, the L405 is a much improved car, as you’d expect, looks wise is subjective.

You can get adaptive cruise on the L322....

I think the general consensus across some on here is that the L405 is a better car, but the L322 is a better Range Rover, if that makes sense?

The L405 is aluminium, and would be a big pull for me if only to avoid dodgy rear wheel arches, but it is more car like to drive (good or bad....).

I love my 2011 4.4 TDV8, as I feel it has the L405 driveline in an L322 body...

You prob need to drive them both and see what you think.

The L405 will obviously be newer, faster, lighter, more frugal... just like Steve Austin 🤣

Well a friend of mine has a L405 and he prefers my L322, as previously mentioned you need to drive each one as you are buying it. I think there are pro’s and con’s in both Range Rover Vogue SE 4.4 TDV8

Both are great cars, finding a late L322 in the condition I wanted ultimately pushed me to the L405 when I was looking.

I’d still like to own a late L322, there’s something that feels incredibly special about the L322. Sold - Bell a 2015 MY16 Loire Blue Autobiography 4.4 SDV8

Pick a good one and you won’t be disappointed with either... both are class... a nice L322 has quite the presence and always make you look twice 👍🏻

I went for the 4.4 TDV8 L322. In my opinion it's the last 'true' Range Rover shape rather than a generic jelly mould and the engine is basically the same as the SDV8 used in the L405.

The other issue is that if you want to take your Range Rover off road the L405 has way too much plastic that's easily damaged.

Don`t forget that the new shape is more nickable? so the insurance will be higher, try looking for a 2012 L322 car as it is more sorted than the early models?

Lots of reasons for and against both models. In my case I wanted plenty of rear legroom for the kids, and the largest boot possible so that we can fit everything in when we go camping.

The 405 has about another 10cm of rear legroom than the 322, and if the specs I read are right, it has about 70% more load space area/boot size.

That clinched it for me, but if those specs aren’t high on your priority list, then the 322 might be a better option for you. Just work out what makes the most sense for you.

From the research I have done so far it looks like an late L322 TDV8 will meet my requirements.

A standard Vogue has all the goodies I need. My ideal car would be dark exterior (black, blue, green) light interior but most importantly around 60000 miles, service history and few previous owners. I would like the car to be in standard specification, not into big wide wheels or additional chrome.

I can see a few on the market now, I need to get out and start searching!
