TDV8 - diesel rattle normal?

I don’t know whether I was expecting complete silence but when I pull away from say the traffic lights and accelerate, I hear the familiar diesel clatter. My TD6 did this as well.
Having no other TDV8 to compare it to, is it normal? On the driveway it purrs and revs very quietly. I wasn’t expecting it to be so audible.

I found the same thing coming from a 2004 4.4 which was almost silent inside the car at tickover which the TDV8 is not but once up to cruising speed the TDV8 is much quieter than the petrol. I think the acceleration "snarl" sounds quite good. 2010 3.6TDV8 Stornoway Grey/ Black interior - gone

I think I was expecting more of a v8 roar than a diesel clatter. I’ll give it a good run up the motorway and see what it sounds like.

No I know. As long as this is how they are supposed to sound I’m happy!

You get a nice snarl from the exhaust when giving it the beans. It shouldn’t be that clattery on pull away, but still not V8 Petrol like.

Give it a good run. Mine hates short journeys and is much nicer after a clear out.

Mine does exactly what you are describing. Nasty noise, sounds like pre ignition. Harsh tinkling noise. If anyone has any ideas I would be grateful. Had a tune up guy out who drove and said he couldn't hear anything wrong.
Thanks
Rhys

Mine is exactly the same, my mechanic says absolutely normal and nothing to stress about.

my 2012 4.4 TDV8 is only ever remotely like that when cold, as soon as it reaches temp it is very quiet.
i was surprised how quiet it is compared to my old TD6 2012 Vogue 4.4 TDV8 - Current

My 3.6 was a bit noisy, 4.4’s have been nice and quiet. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Mine you could make out the nice turbo boost over the sound of the V8, very nice, especially with the caravan on the back. BMW i3 Electric Car

Not driven one with your engine - But -
Has the noise you get changed over time at all? If it is a tappety noise, excuse the term, sounds like my Td6 then I would only worry if it has got worse.

As you said, would be handy to hear another of the same type etc.

If it has got worse, or for peace of mind, it may well be handy to get a garage or the gear to take real oil pressure readings, rev the engine and watch the oil pressure, ( I know some cars have a plug to remove to connect a pressure gauge line )
That or sticking tappets - I believe some call them hydraulic plunger assemblies, amongst other terms.

How long since you changed the oil? I find big diesels really like fresh oil and start to sound a bit more rough on older oil.

There is so much going on with lifters, injectors, pulleys, sprockets etc that if you start trying to isolate sounds you give yourself sleepless nights lol.

I find a quick stint in my high miler D5 Volvo makes the TDV8 much more refined! 1996 Disco 1 3.9 V8 on gas (Sadly Sold)

My 4.4 TDV8 - No sign of knock on idle and free revving on the drive.
Light acceleration gives a tinkling sound but no heavy knock like 200/300 TDi.
Under load when towing the exhaust note is muffled by the effect of turbo.

4.6 Petrol - true V8 rumble.

Turbos take that away unfortunately. They had to modify the turbo exhaust in Formula One to give a 'better' sound. Forty years of progress. 1972-2012
