| Another EGR Thermostat Swap | |
After lots of fluctuating coolant temperatures and a complete inability to get out of the blue section on a cold day I thought I'd try the EGR Thermostat swap, if only because it looked easier to change than the main thermostat.
Obviously it was still pain in the butt as I couldn't work out how to remove the radiator fan cowl (and radiator fan, I guess). Nor was I smart enough to work out how to remove the clips holding the small section of black rubber hose right above one of the bolts that I needed to remove.
It looks like there is a cap head bolt holding the bracket but it is underneath and behind the EGR Thermostat body. There is also a star fitment bolt to the right that could also free things up to gain easier access but it appears someone had been in and butchered it completely at some point in the past.
Even after pulling the hose from the end of the EGR Thermostat there still isn't enough room to give easy access to the bolt requiring the star adapter. It might be possible from a slightly odd angle if your star bolt hasn't been abused in the past but who knows...
Easy to see once the EGR Thermostat is out of the way but nigh on impossibly to reach with it in place.

Maybe I got lucky but I found the old vertical ring spanner trick was the only way I could remove the second bolt holding the EGR Thermostat down. Put the spanner over the top of the bolt and use a screwdriver through the ring to apply enough force to turn the bolt. It was extremely fiddly but, once loose, I could just about get it to spin with a screwdriver and a pair of needle nose pliers.

With the EGR Thermostat removed it was easy to see that this had indeed failed as you could blow air through it easily.
However, I wasn't anticipating that the seal would be completely shot also. No idea if this is the standard seal but not only had it been crushed it had also started breaking down and was badly cracked.

As I hadn't ordered a replacement seal I used the only suitable one I had to hand. A bit of rubber grease and it stretched enough to fit.
After scraping away the residue from the old seal everything dropped back in to place and then it was a simple case of bolting everything up in reverse.

I still have no idea how those hose clips come undone but I'm relieved to have swapped the EGR Thermostat without needing to try too hard to remove them.
