Can you post up a video for us to listen to the ticking you are talking about? Also, is it possible the timing chain tensioners have already been addressed? My experience is that when Land Rover carry out work under warranty, they don't issue any paperwork.

As has been said though, these are not particularly quiet engines so it is easy to become paranoid

Here you go, remember it’s a 5.0 Supercharged and not a TDV8 Diesel!!

This is at about 2 minutes after startup, not fully up to temp. Can also faintly hear it inside.

Looking online more, maybe it could be the supercharger snout bearing? If we're lucky?

I hate to say this bit that does sound like the beginning of timing chain troubles. Supercharger noise tends to be a more random clatter as the teeth bounce off each other.

A simple test is to slip the Supercharger belt off and then briefly run the engine.

I don’t think it’s either. As suggest it is easy ish to eliminate the super charger. I guess you are hinting at the deeper thunk thunk thunk noise?

I’m not sure what that is, is there enough oil and is it the right grade? one way to eliminate it is to make the exhaust louder 😜😬

Booked it in for tomorrow and we'll see what the dealer comes back with......

Pretty distraught that I have a petrol V8 that sounds a bit diesely. None of that from the 4.2, which I accept will always be quieter as it's not direct injection.

Mobile phones microphones aren’t great at picking up noises. I can’t help that because the exhaust make these so quite that you are simply hearing noises. I don’t hear a diesel noise to be honest. No bag of nails sound there.

Open the exhaust up and listen to that V8 burble.

I have a couple of cars with very loud exhaust and my father also uses this so don’t want to go too crazy.

It would be fun to have electric bypass valves!

Has anyone tried removing one of the centre resonators or just the rear box, a bit more burble without going overkill?

It doesn’t make sense to drop 1.5k on a new system, and I actually like the standard pipes although I see some people say it makes the car look like a wheelbarrow

Had a report back on the noises and various other things.

They say that they are sure the timing chain is OK but there are two ticking sounds.

One is the supercharger coupling/snout

The other is the viscous fan (surprised that this car has a viscous fan, old tech!)

This is from an official Land Rover service centre which is know to be cheaper than the other local sales and service dealers.

None the less I'm sure a decent independent would be cheaper.

I did quiz about parts and labour breakdown on the phone although didn't get it on a follow up email



Inspection Two service £529.78 inc

Ticking viscous coupling £765.30 inc

Supercharger snout replacement £1201.03 inc

Lower tailgate strap £61.22

Wiring to both front shocks £252.00 inc

Time to strip for the coolant fault £114.00 inc. (may need a housing/may not)

Code read £54.00 inc.

Time spent so far investigating and stripping £228.00 inc.

Sub total £3,319.33

Agreed to discount down to £2850.00 inc VAT

So, going to talk to the supplying dealer to see if they would contribute to the supercharger at least.

The thing is the 3 month "warranty" point of view I suppose there haven't been any big failures, just things that are failing.

I could get the parts and do the work myself but just don't have the time. I have my own ramp and tools but it's got a long term project on it at the moment.

The supercharger snout can be bought for circa £300 by the looks, plus some gaskets, belts etc

We bought her for 18k and has expected to spend up to 2k on something after purchase to be honest, still not great!

But relieved that the timing chains seem to be OK.

The softening blow is that it's our business paying for this not directly my pocket.

I've said I'll call them on monday to let them know which work I want done.

Think I'd take a slow drive down the M4 and get Craig to do it...

All sorted, the dealer has agreed to contribute £750 which we both thought was fair, I'd already negotiated the price of the car down a lot on purchase and I said I was tempted to ask for £1000 but they have been very straightforward to deal with.

I did ask the service agent to go through it in fine detail and always expected to spend something on it so I'm happy.

No doubt could get someone else to do the work for 25% cheaper overall but this avoids the faff and I would still have an inspection charge to settle if I take it away etc.

I hope so, I have quite an emotional tie to the old 4.2, wish I could keep both!!! But won’t as long as this one gets sorted.

The new seats are one of the backward steps. Not sure how the leather compares either. Give it time!

just keep the 4.2 not worth alot now
