Trailer winch options/advice

Hi All

I am after some advice on a suitable winch for my Ifor Williams LM166 trailer

I seem to be transporting more vehicles than I planned when I bought the trailer 6 years ago. So I think it is time for me to get a winch. It is fine when I have a vehicle that drives, but the last few uses have been to shift cars that have broken down.

Should I get a manual winch, if so would it be a 2 tonne or 3 tonne winch?

Or would an electric one be better, if so what would would be suitable? can I power it off the towing electrics on the RR or should I use a separate battery?

Thanks

You wont be able to power it from the towing electrics.

Install a battery on the trailer and split charge it from the car. BMW i3 Electric Car

Thanks, Thought the cabling maybe a little to light for the amps an electric winch would require. Looks like I now have a use for the old FF battery 56 TDV8 Vogue SE

We had an Ifor Williams CT166 with a manual winch and although it did it’s job, it was bloody hard work winching something onto the trailer. I remember winching a Disco 2 on years ago and had to take turns with my Dad to get it up and onto the bed. Our bed tilts though so yours would be a little easier I guess

We’ve now got a CT166 with a 3 tonne electric winch on it. It’s got it’s own battery on the front of the trailer. I’ve got a C-Tek quick realease connector on the battery to make it easy to keep it charged. The battery box, winch and all the gubbins were fitted by Ifor Williams when the trailer was ordered.

I’m about to convert the trailer to 13 pin electrics so that the car can be used to charge the battery on the trailer whilst towing it.

I’d definitely not be going for a manual winch ever again!

thanks David. I will probably be going with an electric winch as another member has offered me one. 56 TDV8 Vogue SE
