Upper Cubby box lid - damper replacement 'How to'

These steps are relevant for my 2012 TDV8 AB. I believe earlier models differ so this isn't going to help everyone but those of you with later model L322s will benefit!

The damper part number is FFZ500130 for both the upper and lower dampers.

You'll need T15, T20 and two T30 Torx screwdrivers (ideally, 2 T30 sockets on ratchets, a T15 and a T20 screwdriver)

Open the top lid and undo the 7 T15 Torx screws holding the upholstered top in place.
This will now come off but it's tethered by the top of the damper.
Reach in with a small screwdriver or long-nosed pliers and remove the circlip then push the clevis pin out (I used the pliers on my Leatherman Wave).
Move the passenger seat forward so that you can get at the cubby box hinge.
Using the T30 ratchets undo the passenger side end of the hinge and prise the silver trim cover off
Using the T20 screwdriver undo the bolt holding the bottom of the damper in place.

To quote a famous car maintenance publication, reassembly is the reverse of disassembly.
I'd be tempted to do the top of the damper first otherwise you're working with a restricted amount of room to get the clevis pin and circlip back in (ask me how I know! Rolling Eyes ) and you might want to grow a third arm to hold the lid in the right place while you get the lower damper bolt back in. Alternatively, do what I did and get someone to help you!

Good luck. The life you have is the only one you'll get; make the most of it.

So for 2012's, we also have TWO dampers, correct? And both are the same part number FFZ500130.

I was a bit confused. The posts that I read stated two dampers but were in reference to the early model L322. In my reading, I stumbled upon this part number for the late models, but none of the posts clearly stated that late models also needed two dampers. Yes, I guess I could go check on my car...but it's dark and cold out Smile.

I know this is an older thread, but hopefully someone can clarify. 2012 Range Rover Autobiography
