The main problem with the Diesel engines doing low mileage, especially if it is only a short journey each time, is the DPF factor. they need a good run out to get to temp and to regenerate or they fill up quickly.

I do ordinarily about 15-17K miles per annum. Not so much the last year. Although I still managed 7K somehow...

Cheers fellas! I'm getting from this that around 5K a year mainly longish journey miles should be fine then. Was worried that sitting around for long periods could somehow corrode the insides etc. as you have a lot of fluids in the car not moving around much. I don't expect to be using it to pop down to the local supermarket that much! L405 4.4 AB Loire Blue

I do no more than 10k miles in any year and this last one only about 7k. My FFRR is used infrequently, perhaps once every 10 days but often less frequently and in most cases will be for a decent journey, so 30 plus miles, but invariably longer. Same with my previous FFRR and the two RRSs I had before. Never had a problem with DPFs, condensation etc. The L322 had issues with a diesel pump and an egr valve, but they’re quite common no matter what your mileage pattern. So long is you give your car regular long runs, I wouldn’t worry unduly. |

I’ve done just over 8,000 miles in 8 months in mine plus about the same in my wife’s Golf R as I’m trying to balance the mileage across both cars a bit better. Pre lockdown, the Golf did around 10k miles a year and my car did 30k. I did just under 60k miles in 2 years in my last car which was a BMW 750i, it was surprisingly economical for a 450hp twin turbo V8, certainly better mpg than the SDV8. MY23 Panamera E-Hybrid

I was doing 20-25k + in mine & now it’s a 2nd car so looking at 5-8k. it’ll get 1 maybe 2 decent 90mile round trip runs every week & its the day off car it’ll also be on a ctek when not used.

I do approximately 10000 a year, it can sit in the garage for weeks at a time and I have had no issues. Garage is integral to house and is heated, not sure it makes a difference but damp not an issue. ------------------------------------------

I used to do substantial mileages year-in year-out, partly due to work, and partly due to following my football team to away matches!

I do maybe 5k a year which is much better suited to my now petrol PHEV. Previously, however, I ran a RRS 3.0 diesel which after 9 plodding years was purring like a kitten despite the low mileage which I would attribute in part to my fastidious maintenance, including funky (if inexpensive) fuel additives. So in your case, just be aware diesels especially do not like low mingle and hate short mileage, so just pamper and it will last forever. L405 P400e Autobiography (MY2020)... I added 400 ml of Archoil AR6400-D MAX Professional Diesel Engine, Turbo, DPF & CAT Cleaner Concentrate, topped off with standard diesel. Thereafter at each fill up I added Archoil AR6900-D Max Advanced Diesel Fuel Synthesis, again only using standard diesel. She ran like a dream, silky smooth.

Thanks for the info, really interesting! My plan is to just feed the car premium fuel but as I get more confident in playing around with this sort of stuff I may consider your routine. Is the reason you used the additives alongside standard diesel (rather than premium) that the premium stuff includes similar additives and you didn’t want to risk over saturating the fuel mix?
