ZF 6HP26 Gearbox Adaptions

I replaced all of the solenoids in the gearbox on my SC and then filled the gearbox with fresh LifeGuard 6 oil.

I set the level using the IID Tool to monitor the temperature and after I’d done that, I reset the gearbox adaptions.

I’ve read online now that I might have made a horrendous mistake in resetting the adaptions as soon as I put the fresh oil in it rather then driving it before having done so, but, it’s done so now I need to make sure I relearn it properly.

I’ve done 7 or 8 miles in the car so far and the changes feel good, however, I’ve found the below process for relearning the adaptions in the ZF 6HP26 in the Discovery 3/4 and have read that it’s the same for the RR.

Quote:
There are 2 drive cycles version that need to be performed after a clear adaption was done. We suggest trying both (please read the rest of the e-mail before proceeding):

*

First

*

The transmission should reach normal operating temperature (80-90 °C) at least once (to expel

any air in the system) before commencing the adaption cycle.

For transmission adaption to take place, the transmission should be at a temperature higher

than 30 °C. The transmission temperature should be achieved by driving the vehicle at various

speeds and loads in 'Normal' mode.

1 . Select 'D' (drive) transmission mode.

2 . Accelerate*gently*to 35mph (60kph) above 1800 rpm engine speed.

3 . Decelerate to 10mph (15kph).

4 . Apply gentle braking to bring the vehicle to stationary.

5 . Hold vehicle stationary using brakes for ten seconds.

6 . Repeat steps 2- 5for a total of five repetitions.

7 . NOTE: The next steps of the adaptation process will avoid the phenomenon described as

'tip-in-thump' where a harsh 2-1 downshift or 1-2 up-shift may be experienced.

Accelerate gently to 15mph (25kph).

8 . Apply brake firmly and rapidly decelerate to 1mph (2kph).

9 . Rapidly apply 50% to 75% throttle.

10 . Repeat steps 7to 9for a total of six repetitions.

*

Second

*

NOTE: This process must be carried out in normal mode*(not sports mode).*The

transmission fluid temperature must be above 60 deg C (140 deg f) (vehicle at normal

operating temperature will ensure transmission fluid temperature is above 60 deg C (140

deg f)).

*

Drive the vehicle for ten miles in an urban environment to provoke the transmission to

carry out upshifts and downshifts.*Use light throttle*only and do not exceed 2500 rpm. At

one point in the drive cycle, when the traffic conditions allow, accelerate gently to 60mph

(95 km/h) then allow the vehicle to coast down to 25 mph (40 km/h).

*

*

Also, you must be careful to avoid creating the fault during the drive cycles. Gently release the accelerator pedal when the transmission is up shifting, especially from 3-4 and do the same when it downshifts, especially from 4-3. The fault is triggered by excessive slip and prevents the drive cycle to complete itself. Once the learning has begun, the issue should go away (in theory, if there was nothing wrong with it in the beginning and if your oil level and quality are good)

So... my questions are:

1. Should I reset the adaptions again and then follow this procedure?
2. Should I start this process as it is just now?
3. Or should I just carry on driving it normally without trying the above process?
4. When carrying out the learning process, do they need to be done immediately one after the other or can you turn round, find a quieter bit of road, etc?

If I have indeed made a mistake by resetting the adaptions immediately, I’m hoping that the above process might make the best of a bad situation before any problems arise from it.

Any advice welcomed!

Thanks,

I wouldn’t reset again , just continue driving or run through the procedure
When I reset mine , i couldn’t find roads quiet enough to do the procedures back to back, but the gearbox seemed to learn OK. Pretty sure the procedure is there to speed up the learning process
Did you update the gearbox SW too ? I got an update via GAP as it showed one as available for my 06 SC 4.2 SC - sold , now bought back

Not got a clue but I don't think doing any of that is going to harm your box so why not give it a go...

I too have read horror stories of people resetting adaptions but you will only hear from those who tried it and something bad happened, which was more than likely down to a worn or defective box anyway...

Good Luck... Thumbs Up Pete

hi im having a bit of harsh gear changes and was thinking of clearing the adaptions ,i have replaced the tq and also replaced filter and done 2 oil changes so a sort of mega flush ,i did read some where that if you have done any work on the gearbox (repairs/oil change ) then it would be ok to carry out the clear adaptions .im also going to update my software using the gap tool ....have you found the gearchanges to be any better ?
thanks will
