Hi All,

Seeking help on my 2005 RR 4.4 with 195k. I recently bought it for $800 USD knowing it had a bad air suspension. When I bought it, it had "Air Suspension Inactive", as well as "HDC Inactive" and the DSC light on the dash. Using my diagnostic tool, I looked at the fault codes and saw that it had "Reservoir pressure unchanged when filling", "Too much energy required for regulation: front axle", and "CAN bus fault". Also, there was no light on the air suspension control on the center console.

I cleared the codes and used the diagnostic tool to run the compressor. I took it for a spin and found that the front right corner was lower than the front left. When I parked it and got out of the car, the front left bag exploded.

I replaced both front air struts, and now the air suspension light is on the controls on the center console, but the system still isn't working. The same three error codes are still on the dash. When I run the diagnostic tool, there's no longer any error codes in the Air Suspension module except "CAN bus fault".

I tried the 'lock to lock' steering wheel turn trick, to no avail. I checked and replaced all fuses associated with DSC, HDC, or the air suspension. I noticed that all the height sensors were reading different heights even though a manual measurement showed the car was all level, so I manually reset the heights using the diagnostic tool. Still nothing. I can fully raise and lower the car using the diagnostic tool. But I can't get rid of the error message on the dash, despite not having any fault codes.

So, I'm at a point where I'm not sure where to go from here. From reading countless other threads, there are a few possible culprits:

-ABS module (from time to time the ABS and BRAKE light come on for a few seconds when starting the car, but they always turn off)
-Steering Angle Sensor
-Brake Light Switch
-Bad alignment (car needs an alignment badly, so I'll be doing this regardless)
-bad electrical somewhere (not the battery, it reads 12v off and 14v on)

So, I'm trying to figure out the next step so I can get this thing running. Any and all suggestions are appreciated, as I don't want to just throw parts at this thing.

Try a hard reset,

Battery voltage should be 12.9v for a good battery one hour after it has been charged... 12v is actually a very discharged state...

Bad alignment will have no effect whatsoever...

The sensors do not read height, just a calibration figure, they will never be the same...

First thing with a FF is to ensure the battery is very good....

When you say you don't have codes, do you mean no EAS codes? Or no codes completely?

There are a few systems that will knock out EAS - as you say ABS, steering and others.

Alignment would be the first job - if that means your steering wheel is off centre then your angle sensor input will be implausible meaning stability control is inhibited.

Whether this knocks out EAS I can't remember but it certainly is not wise to try and diagnose other systems when there is an obvious issue outstanding.

Update: tried a hard reset, then the steering wheel lock to lock. Unfortunately, didn't resolve the problem. I did notice the battery was around 11.5v at rest, so I'll replace the battery.

To clarify, there are no EAS codes except "Can bus fault". I can use the diagnostic tool to raise and lower the truck with no issues. But, the HDC Inactive, DSC light, and Air Susp. Inactive lights are all on and I can't use the center console controls.

There's another module called "Instrumentation Lights" (or something similar). There, there is an Air Susp. Inactive fault. When I try to clear it, it immediately reappears.

Got new tires today and asked for an alignment, but went to pick it up and they said they don't have the tools to align a Land Rover...so I'll try a different place tomorrow. Hopefully this fixes it, but I'm not holding my breath.

Any other thoughts?

edit: went through and looked at all fault codes. there was:

-nothing for Steering Angle Sensor module
-ABS module had "58: Precharge Pump" (but this went away and remained away when I cleared)
-Instrument Pack Module had "FB: CAN bus fault - no EGS1 received from A/T ECU", "EE: No ASC4 received from ABS ECU", and "F6: CAN bus fault - no DMER1 received from Engine Management System ECU"
-Lighting Check Module had "57: Air suspension active/inactive", "59: Transmission emergency program fault", and "7A: left front side lamp faulty"

Once again, the EAS module has no errors/faults except "CAN bus fault"

Two spanners...!!! Nothing special about it, just the same as most cars...!

Sort the battery, and the tracking if the steering wheel isn't central, clear all the codes, do a hard reset, lock to lock, then see what happens...

I'm still thinking voltage...

Not sure if they are the same as a D3 but you need to put the suspension in tight tolerance mode to do a wheel alignment. Which could be why they did not do it.

I found that out just after I had it done on my old one, put it in tight tolerance and returned to find it was exactly the same..!!

I guess they hadn't done one before and didn't want to work on foreign stuff....

It's been a while, but I wanted to pop in to provide updates. Unfortunately, I still have the error message and I still can't control the air suspension using the interior controls, only through the diagnostic tool.

First, I got it aligned. It had some frozen nuts/bolts, so I replaced the inner and outer tie rod ends. I also replaced both rear air struts because I noticed the right rear had begun to sag and it looked like the original bag and as long as I have three new bags (front and right rear), why not just replace the left rear.

I took it to an alignment specialist to get a four wheel alignment and they were able to align everything except they said the left rear wheel is roughly 0.5-1 CM off toe. They said they couldn't get it any closer than that and they don't diagnose, all they do is alignments. But, I think that's close enough. I tried the wheel lock to wheel lock trick, no dice. I tried clearing codes, still getting the error message on the dash.

I then replaced the battery, as the volts were low (~11.5). Before hooking it up I connected the positive and negative terminals for 30 sec to clear the computers. Then, I started it and did the wheel to wheel trick, nothing.

I'm at a loss now. The air suspension proper isn't throwing any error codes, just the dash warning, which is thus disabling the interior controls. I have no idea where to go from here except to the dealer, who, even if I wanted to go there, is booked a month out for diagnostics.

Any ideas?

@noquarter1 did you resolve this ?

As of a week ago my car is displaying a 'suspension fault' on the dash.
If you change the touch panel display to show 4x4 info it shows the left rear ride height is not as expected, it is sitting low.
In my case it doesnt affect its ability to raise/lower, and sits level.
There are no fault codes at all.

Just wondering if you found out what it was.

2011 4.4 TDV8 AB Black

Mine did this, turned out to be the steering angle sensor, pig of a job to change but worked. I dont think at the time it was throwing any specific codes up. Just alot of lights and the inability to control the air suspension.
