Engine oil level

I thought that I would check the engine oil on my new to me RR autobiography 2015MY and it was reading on the lower red line and saying that it is underfilled. I added some oil but know difference to the read out. I also carried out the press cancel switch two times exercise but no reading still. I believe that the total oil fill is 11litres, is this correct?
I am suspecting that the sender unit is faulty. Has anyone had the same problem? Oh and if I do fit a new one does it need coding?

Thanks for any help.

Yes it is a known issue. Search for member Zebedee who concocted a traditional dip stick

Piston,
I think you will change your mind about changing the sender unit on an L405 when you realise what’s involved.
A bit easier on an L322 I believe.

The engine oil capacity is not 11 litres on the SDV8. It is 9.4 litres.

As you have added more oil, if I were you, I would drop the oil and refill with the correct quantity. Do not drive with it overfilled. Kev

I was hoping that it fits through the sump and not in it!

Yes I was going to do that when the snow melts.

Nope, is in the sump.....

There is a LR wiring mod which needs to be done so oil doesn’t track j to the turbo harness and knacker that. It’s a cheapish and easy ish loom mod. doubt it will fix a non reading sensor tho. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Is there any obvious way to check if this mod has been done?

Yes, just look at the loom connected to the sensor on the sump to see if you have the little bridging loom fitted.

I fitted one on mine back in November. See here: https://www.fullfatrr.com/forum/topic57501.html Kev

Best me to it. Couldn’t find the thread.... searched for everything!

Worth an ask By the OP to his local dealer to see if he can get it done FOC There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Ok

I sucked out all the oil with my vacuum pump and refilled with with 10 litres of new oil.

Checked level on dash and it said underfilled. Put in another .5 of a litre and still showing as underfilled. Added another .5 litre and it said overfilled!

Rechecked today and it said underfilled. These electronic dipsticks live up to their name I'm afraid to say. reminds me of my Sierra with that electronic dip stick. I hate them. I also have a disco 4 which to be honest is fine with the same system. A kind person on here said that Zebedee supplies an old fashioned dipstick for these cars. Does anyone know how to obtain one please?

Otherwise I am thinking of fashioning one out of a very thin fishing rod material and mark it. I can then make this off to the the sump draw off point with it attached to the bayonet cap.

Thanks.

The capacity is 9.4 litres. Apologies for being direct, but how come you decided to put 10 litres in initially?

You might be best starting off by putting 8.5 litres in, then waiting 15 mins or so before checking the the level and topping up as necessary, waiting a good while for the level to settle before taking a reading. Kev
