Although you can only use Apple's Facetime via Wi-Fi ,

Do any of you Gents know if for instance someone is abroad and their I-Phone is connected to Wi-fi and the other person was back in the UK via another Wi-Fi connection ,

For it to work would the other person abroad need to have Data Roaming on , as i know you can expect to receive high charges if Data Roaming is left on constant .......  ====================================

Wifi shouldn't incur roaming charges. As long as both parties are connected the routing should be clear- like using skype or MSN.

How about switching off 3g roaming and just leaving the wifi on - afaik there are no global roaming charges for using wifi only GPRS/3G. The iPad/phone should default to a wifi signal if there is one around and wifi is enabled.
