Suspension air bag advice

2011 4.4 TDV8 L322

Front right suspension air bag is not holding air. Compressor compresses and lifts but afer a short while it deflates. Garage says the air bag has a leak. Now I find air bags for 60 quid online and garage quotes 200 + VAT for piece. I am assuming the latter is the entire strut, right? Do I *need* to replace the entire strut or can I just get the 60 quid piece and is it difficult to replace just that?

Most do the whole strut less labour and less recall. £ 200 is ok per corner labour varies but expect £60 per corner. Normally do both if front. Help got CAR OWNER VIRUS!

VDS?

Now I looked them up, there are those for non-VDS and VDS models. Assuming the VDS ones are the more expensive ones I am guessing thats what I have? 2011 4.4 TDV8? Was that VDS or non VDS or was that an option? 2011 L322 Vogue SE 4.4 TDV8

I did my suspension airbags at home on the drive. I would still say replace the airbags and not the whole strut IF the rest of the strut is OK. It's not complicated at all changing the airbag. I was advised not to go for the cheapy eBay airbags, I went to island 4x4 and paid around £100 for each bag, good quality kit, no problem after at all up to me selling the car. BMW i3 Electric Car

I used island 4x4 for mine, different engine and age to yours but they seem to have a range. OEM manufacturer I believe. Worth looking at the date on your shock before you decide on just bag or whole strut. One of mine was 2005 one later so just decided to update both even though it was fine.

The big bolts can be very tight. I used an IID tool to deflate bags and did it at home.

You need VDS ones, and I’d do both sides.

But from various feedback, some people had had issues while just replacing the bag in getting it to seal properly. Given it's my main car, I plan to keep it for several years yet, and I don't want to have to take it apart again, I went with buying a pair of complete new struts from Island 4x4 and fitted them. The old struts seemed okay, but had done about 75k miles, so I decided they deserved a change anyway. The new parts totalled around £800, but were super easy to swap out, and I've had no issues in the year since.

But there's a range of opinions on here - some have done just bags fine, some have had issues with that route!

As long as you have some mechanical dexterity and know how to deal with 'O' rings there should be no issues sealing them. I did both of mine, both were fine first time. BMW i3 Electric Car
