I am trying to find more info, but something tells me that they used an engine intended for the Discovery in the L322 when supplies from BMW dried up , but the 3.6 V8 wasn’t yet available ??

Never heard that, and it‘s very unlikely. Fit a new engine for a short period. |

Well, I haven't heard of the L322 being fitted with a V6, but JLR have just discontinued the 4 cylinder engines on the defender after a matter of months. They fitted the 2.2 ford diesel to the evoque for a matter of months. It seems a habit of theirs to create these orphan fleets when the engine is behind schedule. |

I have tried to find any old references to the supply problem they had as the BMW supply ended, but failed.
