Whirring noise from engine (possibly LH side) 4.4 TDV8

My 2012 TDV8 makes a whirring noise that rises and falls with engine revs, not road speed. It does it with the car in neutral and at a standstill as well as when moving in gear. It sounds like a sort of noisy diff kind of sound but the fact it does it at stand still precludes that?, could it be belts/tensioners?, any ideas greatly welcomed.

Have replaced belt tensioner and three of the idler pulleys as they were showing wear. I have a stethoscope type of tool I’ll see if I can get to water pump in the morning and give it a go.

The best way to describe it is like a scalextrix car motor. It’s there both in neutral and when driving.

I noticed something like this after a service. I’ve not noticed it outside, only in the cabin. Same scenarios are you’ve described 1995 4.6 v8, green/tan (long gone)

Same as mine, can’t hear it when seated in the back. Still got an annoying whine coming from the front drivers seat, which I know is very expensive to replace, should have checked before marrying her. Thank god she never reads this.

Will feedback in the morning after checking water pump.

Water pump seems fine. Will try releasing belt and running without to try and eliminate idler pulleys and ancillary components. Definitely seems to be less responsive on first start up in this colder weather for a couple of minutes, but it might just be paranoia.

Hi

Been under the car today fitting mud flaps. Whilst fitting offside front noticed bolt missing from corner of gearbox/engine protection plate. Very springy and vibrates significantly. Did not have correct bolt and loosely fitted what screw I had, couldn’t do up completely tight, but the droning has reduced dramatically. Will acquire correct fitting screw as soon as somewhere open, but looks like possible fix.

You have two under engine shields that cover whole area. You can’t miss them. My issue was with the back one that was missing screw. Worth checking all of it for missing fixings.

That would be a nice find and a good fix!
as for the cold start mine seems to rev more during the very cold mornings -1 to -4 no issues starting though.
I might yank the MAF's and temp sensors and run some electrical cleaner over them i doubt they have ever been done.
But i think it is normal as soon as temp builds runs like it always has!!

I had a jeep grand cherokee a good few years ago now used to put plumes of black smoke out the back when hot. anyhow after months of hunting for the cause i changed the MAF and intake temp sensor, when i started the car you should of heard it clicking and rough running it cut out, i managed to start it then it coughed and spluttered clicked once more and the engine just went smooth and very quiet. That cured the black smoke and the car just ran great after that it had never ran better!! 2012 Vogue 4.4 TDV8 - Current
