United Kingdom 2011 Range Rover Vogue SE TDV8 Stornoway Grey
Help me get 405 clued up

hi team,

If you asked me about features, differences etc for an L322, especially 2009-2012s I could tell you a lot. However I've not followed the 405 since I've been so happy with my very well spec'd 2011 Vogue SE.

However as a happy-but-on-borrowed-time-due-to-ULEZ TDV8 L322 owner, I am moving from casual browsing on the familiar selling sites to a more focussed search for my next Range Rover.

It needs to be ULEZ compliant so it could be a petrol (quite tempting) or a SDV8 as it's epic, I know the engine well, and I think (aside of the oil level indicator) the bugs have been ironed out by the time the Euro 6 version came out. eg turbo drain.

That puts any 2013-2017 5.0 on the menu
or
a Late 2015 to 2017 SDV8

I do really like the 2018 door-mounted seat switchgear but up to 2017 is top end of budget.

Anyhoo, engines aside, I need to know stuff...

1. What year did the anti-roll bars become electrified. That sounds good.

2. Electric recline rear seats. A must. Some have one button, some have two. What's the difference?

3. Upgraded screen / nav came in MY2017 I think, is that right?

4. Does the 2017 widescreen head unit run Apple CarPlay?

5. 1700w stereo. Can you tell it's fitted from the grilles on th back of the front seats?

6. Massage seats. A must, when did they appear. Were they available on the rears?

7. Exec rear seating: this is fixed up to 2017 but in 2018 they made it a 5 seat option with a folding middle? Is that right?

8. Heated / cooled seat front and back? Front: are they standard? Rear: how can I tell?

9. ADDED Soft close doors. Are they standard? Are they cool?

What other options do I want?

PS I know, I know, don't buy on spec, buy on history. But my 2011 is fully optioned and it's soooo nice I can't go backwards!

Ta!

. Cheers, Greg

5. To have the 1700w system, it must have grilles in the back of the front seats. BUT, just because the grilles are there, it doesn’t necessarily mean the 1700w system is fitted!

2 Button where ? mine have a single button by the side of the seat to recline the back - but 2 buttons per seat in the boot to fold/raise each side. The buttons by the side of the seat will also raise the seat from folded, but won't fold it.

5 as above - there is one seat upgrade option that has grilles but no speakers.

8 Cooled fronts are on the VSE & AB - an option on a Vogue - not heard of them in the back - there would be perforations in the seats - they work by blowing air.

Do you need a tow bar - an expensive retro fit.
Deployable steps ?
FBH ?

The facelift / new lights was around 2017 too

As above, I have the optional (in 2017) 24 way adjustable front seats on my MY 17 Autobiography SDV8. These seats were standard spec. on the SV Autobiography, which also has the mega sound system as standard (at least it did in 2017) so I have the grilles on the back of the front seats, but no actual speakers behind them.

The MY17 SDV8 Autobiography is my favourite year L405, it has points 2,3,4 6 and 8. Plus the big opening sunroof, dynamic response suspension (a must IMO and not available with the V6 diesel) and the large opening sunroof. It also has just one screen, hidden exhaust tips and the upper storage on the front door cards. Each to their own though. Thumbs Up

Hey Greg

1. Adaptive Dynamics is standard on all except the Vogue and Dynamic Response is standard on the SDV8 and the V8SC

5. Speaker grilles above the front seats in the roof lining denote the 1700w option - the seat back grills come with certain seat options rather than being dictated by the stereo option.

6. Front Massage seats - only standard on AB, but option on VSE. Rear massage seats only available on SV AB. Cooled front seats standard on VSE up, option on Vogue. Rear cooled seats AB up, option on VSE

For me my one request has to be adaptive cruise - standard on VSE and AB some years and in option packs in other years.

Other things to look out for:-

Front fog lights only standard on AB above - option on V and VSE.
Extra large screen wash tank was £35 option - only adds a smaller additional 2.1litre tank which is linked but have to fill both tanks seperately.
The fixed large panoramic roof is standard on all (but no cost option to delete). Can't remember what year that came in though as don't think it was available from launch. For opening panoramic roof was no cost option on AB up until 2016 then standard (but no cost option for fixed) 2017
Gesture tailgate from MY16

Your L322 is well specced so understand why you are concerned about options but you'll find the L405 a different class regardless of what spec you buy.

I have the 2016, 2017 and 2018 (face lift) brochures here if you need more info on specs

Cheers

Chaps thanks so far - really helping get me up to speed.

Really helpful Thumbs Up

Adaptive - yes absolutely - I have it now. I will be looking at VSE up I think.

Keep it coming!

O, what about soft close doors? Do I need them? I mean they sound good Smile

Rear seats one button vs two:

Yea soft close standard on vse upwards - nice feature but not really that necessary on main doors but cool looking feature - but really good on powered tailgate as it stops any slamming noise Current Fleet:-

Rear seat massage has always been a £2500 ish option on Autobiography models, so it’s rare. But de-constructing all the options is like handling greased tagliatelle in mittens. I guess the great thing is the number of 5.0 is sufficiently low that you can forensically examine each car individually!

The 2018+ exec seating is fantastic because it’s luxurious but you can fold the seats down... not flat, mind you, but fold them flat enough, 60/40. The rear massage option on 2018+ means adding hot stone massage which I actually as my default except in summer. Hits the spot. And I would not spec a car without soft close doors because it’s so very convenient, and although buying used you may need to compromise if you’re buying AB or VSE I believe it’s generally standard through the model years.

The 1700W hifi is fantastic but if you’ve not hear it you won’t miss it. Once you’ve heard it it’s hard to imagine not having it. I didn’t know the grilles on the seat backs could be dummy, but the clear indicator is a 3D option in the Meridian settings. Also speakers above the front seat passengers is NOT an indicator, I have seen regular Meridian system cars with these, certainly P400e’s.

Finally, I think the pre-2018 cars are lovely. But I also think the 2018+ cars are sufficiently more modern looking and feeling inside and out if you’re planning to keep the vehicle longer than 3 years. In fact I’d more likely go VSE 3.0 2018 than AB 4.4 / 5.0 2016, for example. L405 P400e Autobiography (MY2020)... Silicon Silver / Espresso

They all have Adaptive Dynamics variable dampers.

Adaptive Dynamics on a Vogue is showing as a £175 option on the 2016 price list although it is listed as standard elsewhere in the brochure. On 2017 it is showing as standard on the Vogue so maybe an issue with some of the brochures - it was certainly my understanding too that it was standard until I checked the brochures before answering but doesn't harm to be informed to check it on Vogue's.

2016 MY brochure

With regards rear seat massage on the 16 and 17 model years, I haven't come across it as an option on an AB - thought it was only available on style 27,28,29 and 30 which was SVA only. Post facelift 2018 the seats changed and brought in the hot stone and rear massage features on the AB

2016 MY Brochure

On a 16 and 17 model year (and earlier too) the headlining speakers above the front seats in front of the sun visors seem to be only there with the 1700w reference system. The Meridian website shows all the speakers for all the options on the pre facelift.

https://www.meridian-audio.com/in-car-audi...nge-rover/

Can't understand why they would be there on non Reference sound 18+ cars except that Conversation Assist is maybe a separate feature on the P400e (as that uses those roof speakers too). I've looked at 20+ 17my cars in the last 6 weeks to replace my 16 and 3 of them had Reference. All 3 headlining speaker grills but none of the other cars did. One car wasn't listed as having Reference but the headlining speakers were there - once I checked Topix it confirmed it - dealer had missed it. But again, always worth checking a specific car spec because changes do happen on a just in time production line. Current Fleet:-

Think it’s a mistake (see also Terrain Response 2 - code 088IA - being standard only on a Vogue) - code 095CB is All Terrain Progress Control, for which you need Terrain Response 2.

Yep agreed - Terrain Response is only available on a Vogue and Terrain Response 2 is the £175 option and the Terrain Response row on the brochure should be the Adaptive Dynamics one. Seen a few like that in the past, should have spotted that Current Fleet:-
