New purchase

Hello all, my first post on the forum. Looking to get a new l405 and found some good discounts on vogue & vogue se. The catch is the cars have been built in 2018 and sat unsold for 2 years or more. The discount looks good but what is the risk? Can the engine and various bearings have deteriorated? Has anyone bought such a deal before?

Hello and welcome.

Which engine are you considering and is it petrol or diesel? Has it been pre-registered, or is it yet to be registered?

If it’s hasn’t been run for two years, you can assume that the battery may be fatally wounded.

Really depends on the discounts.

If it’s a discount compared to the price of a 2018 low mileage then great if it’s a moderate discount compared to a new one then thats a different matter.

A few grand off new prices for a 2 year old car isn’t a good deal, it is still a 2 year old car. So come time to move it on it will just be regarded as a lower mileage version of a 2018.

In terms of bits and bobs deteriorating, it won’t have done it much harm in terms of condition when compared to a 2018 rubber parts will have deteriorated the same as a 2018 would have. Bushes and bearings will be slightly better condition. They don’t like sitting, but if it’s warrantied (which it should be) then I wouldn’t be too concerned.

Engine and drive train should be fine, but I would insist on a full service. It’s more down to how cheap. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

I guess it would also depend on where the cars were stored, in an indoor setting, a compound, or a wet and muddy field? Got - 2017 SDV8 Autobiography in Loire Blue
Had- 2008 TDV8 Vogue SE in Java black
Had - 2007 S/C in Stornoway Grey

Thanks, the car is unregistered with close to zero miles and looks like the discount is based on the model year price. So I should be buying a new car but it will be a MY19 or MY20 registered in 2020 or 2021 when comes to sell which not be easy to explain. Engine is sdv6.

What's to explain ?

Most people just buy off the registration plate age....

If it's a decent discount, I'd buy it

It’s not pre-registered, so the warranty clock hasn’t started ticking yet and (hopefully) you can still get it registered as a 2021 car.

As it’s diesel, you don’t have the worry of stale petrol in the fuel supply and the SDV6 is a nice engine. I’d probably try for a new battery and fresh batteries in both keys but, apart from that, I’d have no concerns 👍

Do they have any half decent colours to choose from?

Let us know how you get on...

That makes it a bit better.

Wouldn’t be too concerned about trying to explain a 19 or 20 MY registered late, especially given what 2020 has thrown up. Plus there is little in the way of cosmetic difference between the years so it’s less obvious than say a 17my registered in 2021, where the car is obviously different.

If they give a full 3 year warranty with it then it seems a no brainier. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

The choice of colours is very limited. The discount is good but not that great if you compare with the latest model on drive the deal, maybe £4K below for an sdv6 instead of a D300.

Tough choice then. I take it that there are no left over SDV8’s?

I don’t think that’s anywhere near a big enough saving for a car that’s been sitting around and has the old engine. MY23 Panamera E-Hybrid

I have to agree with Martin 2. The saving needs to be way better for a car that has been sitting on a disused airfield runway for a couple of years..

Yep, that’s my feeling too but really no expert in that area. But bottom line is :
Wait till March, get the new D300 engine and choose the colour and extras for a fresh out of the line FFRR
Or
Have it now and save 5k for a car that spent 2 years on a runway, has the sdv6 engine and no choice of colours or extras.

If buying with the old engine is a concern, I’d wait just a little longer for the first of the 5th generation Range Rovers which could be only 12 months away.

There being no choice of decent colours would probably bother me more than having the old engine!
