DVD Changer not playing DVDs

Hello all,

So my 6 disc dvd changed hadn’t worked for a while it had been getting slow and then got the mecha error.

The latter is now fixed but it now picks up discs in the changer but only plays copied dvds and cds not original dvds.

Firstly anyone had this before and what was the remedy?

My initial thoughts after some googling was that the laser was getting old and the power needed increasing so I turned to the two pots half a turn clockwise in different combinations- making it marginally better in some and a lot worse in others.

From that I have deduced that the laser is on deaths door and whilst I could keep spinning them it would probably not last long.

From there I googled a new laser block... yea good luck with that no such thing exists for our changers apparently!

I then spent the evening combing through different alpine laser blocks until I found what looks to be identical with the exception that ours has the solder Unshorted the new one is shorted but this is easy to correct...

I have ordered one for £40 and will update how I get on-

@danielb - can you drop me a PM about repair for this DVD changer? i haven't done enough posts yet to be able to send PM's.

I have a 2006 4.2 SC with DVD changer in the boot, no lights on it, fuse is ok. bit of moisture in the area but the amp, sat nav disc deck and bluetooth are both OK and they are in the same area.

Rear screens both turn on and just say DVD error.

cheers

How did you fix it? As a thought, if it was a replacement unit, could it be wrong region? John

Two days of ownership on the 2007 with factory DVD player .... and YES the Alpine DVD player in the back is stuck at disc 3 Smile

This is the sequence that worked for me. It is a combination of info from US forum Rangerovers.net and previous posts on FFRR.com.

1. Open the big slider (2 part door)
2. Pull out the fuse block nr 1 (most left in top row)
Remove the small protection lid as in pic 2 - with the 3 ultra small phillips screws ( as in second pic).
3. Use some sellotape to fix the screws and avoid they get lost (again as in second pic)
4. Put fuse block back in
. While you push the eject button, you willl see and hear the eject mechanism struggling... and probably see the small shelf at disc 3 being stuck.
5. Give it a decent whack with the back of a screwdriver just a few cm's right of the eject button / at the red/orange plastic washer
6. And BINGO ... the 6 disc changer should come out !!
7. Grease the steel eject mechanism (left and right of the small red/orange plastic washer) with some vaseline. Enlarge pic 1 for a visual.
8. Good times !
9. I have not reinstalled the small protection lid - for fear of loosing the screws at install, and the 2 part sliding cover door should do it IMHO. Mark Offringa

Hi Mark, I repair these dvd changers and cd changers, I stock all the parts needed to fix these units, turnaround time is normally a couple of days, all repairs come with six months warranty.
Just let me know if you're interested in getting your unit fixed.
Many thanks Daniel.
