Cheap bottom ball joints ?

Hello all

I had an MOT month before last, performed my usual yearly checks prior to MOT (as with any motor I own).
Finally figured out what the knocking was on the nearside, as I was putting the wheel back on and doing up the nuts. I noticed that the wheel would knock slightly side to side :whoops: !!

This was on the nearside I got my neighbour to apply pressure on the wheel nut with the wrench as I looked underneath and the lower ball joint was having a right old dance (Think I put a post up about it as it was a right pig).

I then decided to shell out £110 on these aftermarket parts

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/RANGE-ROVER-L32...%3A2334524

I had to purchase the lower ball joint studs from JLR as they didn't come with any, and I needed them ASAP as I already had the arms and joints off.....my nearest stealer had them in stock !

Replaced the nearside upper, and lower control arms and bottom ball joint and torqued up to the relevant specs according to RAVE. The car passed MOT with a few advisories (rear frame bushes I think). Used the car for a week or so and replaced the offside with exactly the same for good measure.

Trouble is, I soon realised the parts on the offside I replaced....now has started to knock when going up and down a kerb and over dodgy road surfaces !!
I have tightened up all bolts on the nearside, I even over torqued the bottom ball joint bolt (not the smaller studs) but its still knocking.

The parts look all in good order, i've shoved a pry bar in-between bits.....attempted to rock the wheel again with a wheel wrench but it isn't moving but it knocks.

Perhaps its because I fitted a crappy quality part ? Reason I say this is because on my old octy vrs,
I replaced the bottom ball joint with an aftermarket part. It failed the MOT on this, they even showed me the wheel wobbling side to side on the ramp (I didnt notice this when it was up in the air on my driveway). He and I tightened up the bottom ball joint nut again but there was still movement. So he advised take the aftermarket one back and purchase a genuine one (The MOT was at the Skoda dealership, great bunch of guys down there !).

I replaced the ball joint again at home with a genuine one, took it back for MOT and no movement and it passed.

Anyone else had a similar experience with the aftermarket lower ball joints on these ? - Maybe I should get an OE one instead and give it a go.

Such as this Delphi one here: -

I recently replaced both bottom arms due to knocking much like yourself (one side was knocking so changed both for the sake of it).
I've only used Delphi parts due to friends who are into serious 4x4'ing always recommending them and Britpart if you don't want to pay for the Land Rover parts; all be it I think Delphi actually supply some parts from factory(could be wrong).

Similar to your situation after changing the lower arms I then had a knock from the front. Changed the link arms yesterday and the knock disappeared much to my delight. Changed both sides for the sake of £14 each (Delphi). Easily done even with the wheel on just with the wheel turned to access the front of the wheel arch.

They seem unrelated but I can only go off my own experience and it's now back to silence and a smooth as ever.

Hope it helps

Thanks for the reply, its worth a go I guess isnt it.
“Perhaps” - maybe because i have illiminated play from the upper/lower control arms and lower ball joint. It could b now transffering all the movement to the link arms on that side ?

i recently had a garage change my lower steering column shaft as i couldnt b bothered (then wen i got home i had to turn the steering wheel 1 spline to the right by taking it off) as the original UJ joint was causing play in the steering.
got a 2nd hand 1 cheap in good nick. i thought that might be the source aswell.

Inner and outer track rod/ends are all in goo condition too with no play.

Me and island 4x4 fell out, (long story, had to claim against paypal in the end). so i wont b using them ever again.
